I agree with what you say, but if anyone can tell me who is a better singer in pop music than Elvis or Roy Orbison, I would sure like to know, taking into account that they both have operatic voice ranges.

Sorry, it doesn't work that way, Feddie Mercury and Axel Rose, both have vocal ranges as wide if not wider. I suspect Prince does too. But if their style of music doesn't suit you, well, they won't get your vote.

If you take 'pop music' as an umbrella term for music that is popular. Do you know who was voted as the best singer of all time, by people involved in the music industry, artists, writers, producers etc.

This female singer was........

Freddie Mercury?????? Never heard of Axel Rose. Prince? I have heard of him, but could not name any of his records. I do not know the female singer you are referring to, but for versatility, I would rate Jo Stafford. I can only name one song by FM. How many records could you name by Elvis or Roy Orbison? Quite a lot I would bet. I do know for a fact that both Elvis and Roy were very capable of singing opera. I would be interested to find out if any of the people you mentioned are/were capable of that. I don't suppose you have heard Elvis singing Santa Lucia? I've got to say I am enjoying this debate.

Yes, I'm enjoying this one too, much better than most of the non-debates in other fora.

Did you click on the link in post #2318, That is Freddie in a duet with Montserrat_Caball a very famous opera singer.

Axel Rose, not surprised at that, Guns & Roses aren't everyone's cup of tea.

You are dead right about me being able to name absolutely oodles of songs by Elvis and The Big O. I was born in the very early 60's, my parents were both in their forties and I had two sisters who were 12 and 11 years older than me.

By the time I became aware of music other than nursery rhymes and the theme from Batman, the content was a mix of Glenn Miller, Perry Como, Nat King Cole, Patsy Cline etc and Jimi Hendrix, Family, Joe Cocker, Beatles, Stones etc....... it was a heck of a ride, middle aged parents and hippy sisters.

I started buying records for myself in the mid 70's, and in the 80's started gigging in bands (I'm a keyboard player) The 80's is my personal favourite period and it did stretch a fair way into the 90's .... the number of influential bands started to taper off at the turn of the Century, but they are still there.

Oh, and I have been a Radio DJ for quite a number of years, playing popular music from Aaron Neville to ZZ Top and all points between, so yeah, I can name a few tunes.

Music has been a major feature for my entire life, but I still wouldn't like to single out who I think is the best singer of all time.

Anyway, sticking to the thread title, what am I listening to now?

No one ever is to blame.

You can build a mansion, but you just can't live in it
You're the fastest runner but you're not allowed to win
Some break the rules, and live to count the cost
The insecurity is the thing that won't get lost
And you want her, and she wants you
We want everyone
And you want her, and she wants you
No one, no one, no one ever is to blame

You can see the summit but you can't reach it
Its the last piece of the puzzle but you just can't make it fit
Doctor says you're cured but you still feel the pain
Aspirations in the clouds but your hopes go down the drain
And you want her, and she wants you
We want everyone
And you want her, and she wants you
No one, no one, no one ever is to blame
No one ever is to blame
