Protest on Pattaya Beach against regular weekend markets

PATTAYA: -- A protest was held on Pattaya Beach Road in front of the Central Pattaya Road intersection on Wednesday Morning, comprising of around 120 local Thai Residents and Business Owners who are angry at the use of the beach for temporary markets. They state that foreign visitors are prevented from using the beach while the markets take place. Traffic congestion and large amounts of refuse are also believed to deter foreigners from using the beach during these times. Locals have had enough and want the weekend markets to stop.

Well during my last trip there, i just happened to be walking across this street market, despite the foothpath being quite large(maybe 3 meters wide?), these vendors took a very large part of it, making it a pain to walk there, in some points the most bold ones left probably less then half meter available and put shelfs and other stuff on top of the plants on the other side too, so even for just one person would be difficult to walk there and you can see the owner comfortably layng down at the back of his tent having a snack and watching tv....while hundreds of passers by are struggling  what a mess

Edit: emoticon wasn't displaying

Intresting that there are not enough "Officials" to stop them, however there where enough Police to help Traffic to go around the parked Cars from the Vendors.

I too felt the markets are a PITA.

So the markets are not authorized by City Hall but they have no one (police) to remove/prevent the vendors from setting up their stalls. What this tells me is some poo-yai or senior police official has taken in some protection money and told them to go set-up their stalls without any worries.
