Students protest against smell

CHIANG MAI: -- About 1,000 pupils and teachers from Patana Witayasuksa school in San Pa Tong district protested against the stench from a nearby garbage transit yard under the control of tambon San Pa Tong municipality yesterday.

Sirilak Wuthi-im, the principal, complained in front of her pupils that the garbage yard had caused air pollution at the school for over five years but the stench had become intolerable in the past few months as the municipality began to gather garbage from surrounding districts there.

``Teachers and students faint sometimes. I'd like to call for solutions before the health of these pupils gets worse,'' she said.

In response, mayor Narong Samart promised to solve the problem, initially by changing the garbage loading schedules to avoid teaching hours. He said he would find a new location at a later stage. The mayor denied the large amount of garbage came from Chiang Mai municipality.
