Hello,

I want to buy a car from a friend in France, maybe he could import the car without taxs as it's his car and sell it to me in Thailand for a little more than what he is expecting in France.

It's an automatic Left-handed drive car (so not the same as Thailand), can i get it registered in Thailand ? Can he sell his car just after import without problems ? Can we avoid taxs as he own the car in France ?

This car is super expensive in Thailand and he's selling it for really nothing.

Thanks.

In thailand it's 3 to 4 times more expensive than the price he's selling the car.

He still has to pay import tax, that is kinda hard to overcome. Also at all the toll booths and shopping malls you would have trouble getting your tickets.

Then you would just about break even if your car were right hand drive and the shipping was free.

To answer your questions:

Yes, you can get a left hand drive car registered in Thailand.

Yes, he can sell it anytime after he's paid the taxes.

No, you can't avoid tax as he's owned the car in France.

Even if he's the owner of the car for more than 18 months ? You can't bring your car with you when you come stay in Thailand ?

Whilst it's not impossible to import a vehicle the general opinion is that it's not worth the hassle and cost, expect to pay duty etc. of about 200-300% of the perceived value (that's the value assessed by customs, not what you paid).

In the example given on the customs page, a vehicle with a CIF value of 100 Baht (cheap car) will attract a duty of 213 Baht, after which you have the hassle of registering it.

"I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"

taxes as low as this (213%) for small engines only, max 1999cc and 219 hp.

taxes for cars made in LOS or ASEAN are as low as 20-50%

pickups are tax free

Sorry but l would advise against it, it would end up costing you more than to buy in Thailand.

Last time I did the maths it worked out at about 270% and they might start with the original cost of the vehicle - assuming they ever let you have it back out of customs.

Check into importing to Cambodia or Laos and then driving it across, you may have to deposit it and go out of country every 6 or so months but how bad do you want it?

i suggest finding a sturdy brick wall and start beating yr head against it....far less painful than importing a car to this country.

If you can operate the search function on this forum you should be able to find lots of info, there was a guy, i think his ID was 'tuktukmike' or some such thing, read his story and then come back and tell us u wanna import a car.

As much as i love LOS, it is corrupt, and customs officers are the worst.
