The wife called me today and said her car wont start, she called Honda its a Jazz as I wasnt there and they jumped her car to start it then she followed them to the garage and put in a new battery. I dont know if they checked the alternator to see if it was charging they just said new battery.

Now I dont think this is really the case and they wanted to make money by selling a woman who doesnt know that car batteries occasionally need charging due to short journeys or infrequent use etc.

So its a 2 year old car from new how long do batteries last in the tropics?? 2 years seems almightly short for me.

I think due to lack of use and short journeys it just needed charging.

I would have thought minimum 3-5 years?

However thats for me in the Uk and maybe the heat kills them faster??

They should of done a load test and checked the alternator, but 2 years in this climate even with original equipment possible. At three years I would replace.

more than 2 years is not normal on a new car. batteries are crap quality, alternator for most cars here set at 13,8 Volt (14,45 is ideal), alternator small and battery small. Especially on Honda (I do have a Honda in addition to toyota).

When buying new, Boliden seems to tolerate the hot operating temperature best

A CTEC charger connected over night once a month tops up the battery with 14,45 Volt to 100% charge, which extends lifetime substantially

I have owned 3 cars over here

Jazz 2010

Civic 2006

Accord 2008

The jazz will last around 8-12 months

Civic around 12-16 months

Accord around 12 months

batteries do not last long over here at all. but the good thing is, they are cheap to replace with originals.

Thanks for the quick replies guys wow short lifespan in Thailand then!!! my car in the UK went 5 years and battery ok and had one once 8 years. Thought the cold would finsih them off more than the heat. Live n learn

I was also amazed that a Nissan needed a new battery within 2 years.

In the Uk now they seem to go on for ever.

I had one company car for 3 years and never lifted the bonnet. It obviously had regular servicing. I eventually bought the car and kept it for another 7 years. I sold it 2 years ago and I have no doubt that the original battery is still going strong.

Just recently replaced mine, I bought my Fortuner in January 2006, luckily it gave me warning by losing power or even stalling occasionally.

In this climate you dont get a warning with slow start, like you do in colder climates. It simply dies in one to three days

Connecting your CTEC now and then can actually revitalize your battery. It loves the 14,45 Volt uneven pulses

BTW, just charged the black car, took +40 hours with 4 amp charger:unsure:

Batteries here last no longer than 1 year , we have to change them all the time for

our 2 cars.

typical Thai crap quality they get away with selling , period.

Anyone remember buying a Sears DieHard that lasted close to 3 years thru all sorts of

weather.

How much for a 'Boliden' ?

for Jazz approx 2k baht, its only couple of hundred more for a larger size fitting in same clamps, worth every baht

how well do gel cells go in this hotter climate, my battery will die soon now that I have noticed its age and I can get an odyssey for a reasonable price.

Boliden is the most sold battery in the Middle East, more than 50% of the market

Sounds a bit of hit and miss on battery life Thailand.

Honda Blade sealed battery 5years old and still ok.

Wifey Yam Mio battery every year until we put a sealed one in it.

Wifey Yaris 18 months from new and replaced it with a alledgely better battery but with that l think after market car alarms and other after market electric stuff drains a battery quicker than factory fitted stuff.

Saying that my Vigo battery is nearly 5yr old and fine still, now l said that l hope l have not put the mockers on it.

My friends Prerunner with all his after market gismo's only lasted 3years.

Hi

Problem on small bikes is that many times they dont check water in battery when service the bike, my Yama Nouvo, also the last one i had, they had to take a panel off to get to the battery, they did not bother so when it gave up it was nearly dry

Must admit I v never looked up the spec, but its sealed so should be gel, and I believe its silver plates not lead. Only thing I care about from a battery is no maintance/liquid refill and lifetime compared to price. In this climate and Middle East, Boliden seems to be the absolute winner. Swedish brand name, made in LOS.

Google tells me the full maintainance free Boliden battery is still and lead acid battery, unless of course my Thai to english translator gets it completely wrong.

Here in Darwin, Australia car battery life is, to quote my local mechanic and from experience, 2-3 years, anything after that is bloody good luck! The climate here is the same as Thailand except the other way round i.e. we're just starting our wet season.

In Hawaii's similar climate batteries usually only lasted half their rated lifetimes. Since these batteries were covered by warranties these ratings were probably reality (for North American climates) based rather than just advertising bs.

2007 Toyota Vigo - bought new in January 2007 and battery still going strong.

2001 Honda Civic - Replaced original battery 2 years ago.  Car not driven much, only had 60,000 Km at the time of battery replacement.  Battery was still strong until the wife left the interior light on twice within a two week period draining the battery each time.

2000 Honda Motorbike - Replaced the original battery about 3 months ago at 4,500 Km.

I never put any of the batteries on a charger, but checked and/or replenished batteries with distilled water monthly.  I do not trust maintenance free batteries, worked in Saudi Arabia for 11 years and they would not hold up at all.

the electrical systems in thai manufactured cars are severely under grounded, causing batteries to fail prematurely.

add another ground path and the battery will last for a very long time.

sealed batteries in thailand IMO are worse performers than their wet cell counterparts.
