Everyone seems to talk about the sportivo, and ocassionlly the navi / nuvi ...... but I never seem to hear about people who get the Aperto. With a DVD screen in the rear etc. it seems like a good alternative to consider? Is there a reason why it doesn't seem popular?

The Aperto and Aperto II were limited edition models- dealerships were only assigned 1-5 examples each, and both releases were sold out very quickly (most pre-booked)

The reason you don't see them discussed much is because they're next to impossible to find for sale and the only reason you'd know about them is if you happened to walk into a dealership at exactly the right moment and/or caught something online about them.

Well thats a real pity, because the spec sounds perfect for me..... its a little bit more stylish and has nice features like the rear dvd player..... all without the bone-crushing sports suspension.

Just build the Aperto yourself :)

Start off woth a Fortuner V 2WD, add a good roof-mounted LCD for 5,000 THB fitted, and a top-model DVD/CD/Bluetooth/iPod player in the dash with 7" LCD (from a reputable brand) for another 15k. Then go out and spend 20k on the Aperto bodykit, 20k on upgrading the wheels and tires, another 20k on a good integrated navi system and another 3k for a reversing camera.

All up you'll have spent 1.35M, so same price, but you'll end up with an even better stereo, better nav and your choice of wheels :)
