The old airport is a great place to excercise. No curbs to step up and down, no cars. Easy on the knees. The free aerobics class is easy on the eyes!

What is the history of this airport? Is it a Vietnam Era relic, like Udon Thani? I estimate it to be 2000 meters long, is that correct?

Cheers to everyone, by finding a few little nooks and crannies like this, I am really enjoying my stay here.

Aerobics in full swing by 5.30pm and some fine legs on view, also at Suwan Tong where gogglers can get unobtrusively closer to the action.

Yes, it was originally Crai's Airport. The airforce still have a small base there and it can be put back into use by the military if there is a crisis, as did happen a few years ago when there was some tension with Burma.

The old airport was great, when it was in use about 20-25 years ago. We used to go there and eat.. on the runway ! :)

When a plane was coming in, everyone cleared the way, making a nice view. I never figured out what the golfers did out there :)

The old airport is 1.75 kms long. At the southern end of the runway is said to have been a Japanese runway. This Japanese runway was oriented somewhat diagonally starting from the southern end of the highway and heading south-west towards the south of Doi Khao Kwai hill. There is an Asphalt road that runs almost parallel with this abandoned runway. Apologies for the equally ancient Google Earth image...

Thanks toybits,very interesting.

You don't hear much of the Japanese in Chiang Rai, it would make a fascinating research topic for someone with the language skills.
