With terror written across her face, the Duchess of Cornwall comes under fire from a snarling mob of student fees rioters last night.

In the worst royal security breach for a generation, the car carrying her and Prince Charles was kicked, rocked and hit with paint bombs.

A ‘steaming gang’ of masked protesters ambushed them as they were being driven to the Royal Variety Performance at the London Palladium, raising echoes of the 1974 kidnap attempt on Princess Anne.

Charles and Camilla were visibly shaken but unharmed after up to 20 demonstrators set upon the vehicle with fists, boots and bottles, chanting 'Off with their heads!' and 'Tory scum'

Maybe the hoodlums thought they were at a football match.

i was under the impression that if anyone went to attack the royal family the police would shot to kill? .... what was not to suggest there was a sucide bomber in between the students? or sorry there could have been

Passive protests are one thing. Violent protests are something altogether different. If a masked mod wants to throw things then the security should have the right to shoot to kill. I have no tolerance for masked protestors. There are other ways to get your point across. Shooting a few violent protestors MIGHT have a influence in how crowds react in the future. That is why civil, democratic countries have elections. If the violent protestors want to attack the royalty then ship them off to Iran or North Korea. See how they would fare there.

If a masked mod wants to throw things then the security should have the right to shoot to kill.

I think George might have something to say about shooting the mods

Peterloo and Bloody Sunday spring to mind regarding what happens when security forces over react, particularly in regard to the rights of universal suffrage.

I can't see anything in the rules about it!

I think these protesters have just lost the support of millions of Britons who might, previously, have had sympathy with their cause.

The Personal Protection Officers should be congratulated for not shooting anyone. I'm not sure I would have had the same self control. It does not seem that anyone was in mortal danger, but it must have been very frightening all the same.

I wonder why the PPO's don't carry "less than lethal" weapons. It would have been good to see a few of those idiots lying twitching on the ground. :realangry:

Politicians and world leaders that say one thing and do the other are the ones wearing a mask.

The recent revelations about the mortgage/securities fraud is just an example.

Keep dreaming.

Welcome back, Alex. Whereya been?

Not here. £9k a year for an education which was previously free. Don't blame them in fact I support 'em.

As to the level of violence well they're young and some have yet to learn howto create the best press alongside maximum exposure.

They will learn though and those lessons might prove valuable in paying their debts later.....

Students marching in protest....what a healthy sign for democracy! :)

I concur.

Students marching in protest is indeed a healthy sign for democracy. However, students vandalising, rioting and desecrating statues of heroes, who died fighting to give them that right of freedom to protest is not healthy at all.

I have no problem with freedom of demonstration, even civil disobedience if required, but you do need to understand what you are demonstrating about, or you are not a group of like minded individuals united in a perceived wrong, but a rent a mob.

A previously free education has been out the window for some time and the guidelines, which have not even been set by each University yet as far as I know, have different terms of interest, pay back times and earning scales than before.

The people I have listened to, do not understand the whole terms of reference and so are really batting on a pretty poor wicket, the police have been caught out praying for rain and it turned out fairly sunny, a poor gamble by the authorities, in my opinion.

I thought the tuition tripled? If so, and the cost is now 9k, that means that before it was 3k, not free.

so what would happen if they reversed course on the fees but also on the no fail policy that is present today. imo the big problem with the education system is in the way they have made it impossible to fail. If students were to fail then perhaps not so many would want to continue to higher education, go get tax paying jobs and the fees could be held in check. maybe the day will come when europeans will understand that there is no free lunch.

Not so long ago this was free. Mind you twenty odd years ago when I attended uni there were grants available of £2k a year. This is hitting students from poorer backgrounds hardest and is simply wrong in my view.

Problem nowadays is we have too many students in the UK now every poly and college has been turned into a university.

No its not. Also not a good way to gain support from the rest of the country. Foolish behavior.....its only the beginning of a long battle now though sadly.
