How Do They Count The Visa Days?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'll be landing in BKK at 11:00 am on the 29th of September, and my return flight is on the 29th of October at 20:00. Will my stay be counted as 30 days or 31??

I'm a bit worried that I'll be overstaying my welcome...

Thanks!

I think you are going to be one day over because they will include the first day as day one.

hmmm...

but with 1 day over you don't have to pay , you get a extra stamp.

on airport you pay after 2 day more over.

soon they charche for 1 day 500baht...

For the sake of 1900 you can get a 10-day extension from the local immigration office.

Scouse.

Yes. I was going to say that too. And she could even go to cambodia for a day out and get another 30 days. Might be wrong though, not sure.

I don't mind paying if I'm over my time limit, but I don't want to pay if it turns out to be counted as 30 days...

I've just had a look at my passport and, unless things have changed, the day of arrival is day 1. Therefore, your stamp will expire on 28 October in which case you can apply for an extension once in Thailand. However, if my belief is wrong, it will be apparent once the immigration officer stamps your passport on the day you arrive.

You could also consider obtaining a tourist visa before you travel. That would allow for a sixty day stay in Thailand. No potential for hassle should your return trip wind up getting changed for some unforeseen reason. A tourist visa is cheaper than paying for an extension (and yes, you will definitely be overstaying one day).

These are "admitted until..." dates stamped into my passport on the last few arrival at Bangkok airport without a visa:

Arrival Admitted

date until

18.11.2002 17.12.2002

14.12.2002 12.01.2003

21.02.2003 22.03.2003

09.12.2003 07.01.2004

11.04.2004 09.01.2005

04.06.2004 06.07.2004

The "admitted until" date is always exactly 29 days after the arrival date. No mistake ever.

You still have plenty of time until you leave to get that 60-day tourist visa to adorn your passport.

The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place

OK, this sounds obvious, but just to make sure.

If it says admitted until a certain date, does that mean you are OK leaving on that date, or do you have to leave the day before?

It would be more clear if the word used was admitted through, instead of admitted until.

You're OK leaving on the date stamped in your passport.

None of the answers addressed the possibility of meeting up with an overworked/underpaid and angry check in agent who spots a return ticket outside of the required 30 days and tells him he can not board the aircraft.

Get the tourist visa and solve all your problems.
