Investment values Facebook at $US50bn

GOLDMAN SACHS and Russia's Digital Sky Technologies have invested in Facebook, in a deal valuing the social-networking site at $US50 billion.

Goldman and Digital Sky have invested $US500 million ($492m) in Facebook, people familiar with the matter said. Goldman has put in $US450m, but is expected to sell $US75m of that stake to Digital Sky shortly, which will leave the investment bank with $US375m of its own capital invested, the people said.

Including the $US125m, Digital Sky, which now owns just under 10 per cent of Facebook, will have invested around $US900m in Facebook, the people said.

The deal closed just before the new year, and was led by Goldman's private wealth management unit, the people said. Goldman plans to invite its high net-worth clients to invest in Facebook, which was founded in 2004 and now has more than 550 million users.

Come on Boater buck up, all the wrong colour.........

Digital Sky have invested 900 million and own 10 percent.

Was the 125 million a part of this 10%?

Anyway when I went to school, if 900 million equalled 10 percent, 100 percent equalled 9 billion (US billion, that is).

How does someone thereafter value this at 50 billion? Sounds like he's got London Bridge as the next item at auction.

No, but that's an investment advisor I'd avoid.

(Never accessed Facebook - do not see what it offers)

Guess you can put any value you want on something, but it is only worth what someone is willing to pay or what your friendly banker will loan on it.

Clearly. as it appears now it cannot be worth the valuation placed on it. Someone is banking on the possibility that everything that is now "secret" about account holders will become fungible and convertible to cash.

This one used to be King of the world and look what happened to it:
