Quality Hi-Fi

If you are just chasing basic seperates, you can always just check out your local Powerbuy, normally they are located in major shopping centres etc.

http://www.powerbuy....oduct&Cat_ID=17

edit to say: Thai visa also has an audio sub-forum with heaps of information on it.

Some bright spark came up with that idea a few years ago.

here have a link to that too:

Welcome.

I don't actually like powerbuy that much & I'm not sure you will get the best price available there, but there definately worth a gander. Theres a few hi-fi shops in Siam Paragon that are worth checking out.

Have a dig around on the TV Forum, a few posters have listed shops in there.

For some other brands in the same price bracket that Powerbuy doesn't stock, make sure you check out independant hi-fi dealer Piyanas (also online) which has a nice new shop in Paradise Park shopping centre on Srinakarin Road.

Quality Hi-Fi. KS & Sons Paragon. The Parasound dealer that used to be in World Trade Center has moved there. They are the dealer of Wireworld. As I posted in another thread the people that sell Accuphase & JM Labs Focal have moved to MBK Center.

At Amarin find DECO 2000. Aerial Boulder AYRE. Fantastic dealer. KS World & Elpa Shaw. (Transparent Audio dealer).

A friend and I might open an outlet in Pattaya, with select New stuff and quality 2nd. hand stuff.

Have been in touch with Piyanas and Conice. Just wanted to hear some feedback - before rushing into

anything.

I rather see you open an outlet in Hua Hin :whistling:, but wish you good luck nevertheless if you go ahead with it.

I would not send anyone to Image. Due to forum rules I am unable to say why. PM for more info. Rodent.

What brands are you considering?

I see Von Schwiekert have a new rep. Focus Audio might be a good one. Revel is open AFAIK. Are you talking extreme fi or mid-fi home theater?

Eggleston Works no longer have a rep here. DECO 2000 is the dealer of Totem Acoustics. KS & Son deal McIntosh & Esoteric & Sonus Faber. And others.

There are errors in this list, but after a brief surge I can't find any Thai distributors for these brands, or rather, they do not appear on their respective home page.

During my recent investigations I found dealers for ATC and Adam loudspeakers, and also many other brands in the above list. The only problem is the prices. In most cases you'll pay more than double the UK/EU retail price. Also, I found that Canadian and U.S. hi-fi is much cheaper here than UK/EU brands for some reason. However, if you want to audition a few good brands I recommend the CDC on Ekkamai/Ramintra, it seems to be the best hi-so shopping centre for hi-fi these days, much better than Amarin Plaza or Paragon imho.

I like Piyanas but they don't do any brands I'm interested in. The shops in Paragon and CDC are very friendly too; even if you go in looking a bit scruffy they're always happy to advise, help and let you listen.

I would recommend buying from Singapore or KL. IMHO it's a no brainer for high end stuff, and there are ways and means of getting it shipped into LOS without paying the full 60% import duty (you also avoid paying Singapore GST if you buy to export from Singapore). However some of the Singapore and KL dealers are more helpful than others in this respect, ie. some will not export to LOS if there is already a dealer here (or in some cases even if there isn't a dealer here).

If you're dead set on a particular brand whose Singapore dealer won't export your only option is to nip over there and bring the item back yourself.

Anyway, when I have enough free time I intend to update the sticky at the top of this sub-forum regarding dealers/brands in LOS... it's getting a bit out of date now and could do with quite a few additions.

In the mean time please feel free to pm me if you want pointing in the right direction regarding finding a BK dealer for a particular brand.

I want to put my pianas vote in. Don't get much better than that in Thailand. Make sure you sign up for the member card, that saved me almost 2000 baht. I bought at the sukhumvit 101 showroom, quiet and everything went great.

There are dealers in BKK that I like, and others I don't. You'll know pretty quickly which are anti-farang (i.e they consider any foreigner walking into the shop a timewaster) and which are open-minded and customer-friendly. Piyanas is good, I found Image to be good (and the Levinson dealer next door). KS Sons at Amarin not so. KS Sons at Paragon good. Worst so far is the new Hi End shop in MBK - great great stuff, but got waved OUT by an old Chinese woman sitting in there (mother of the youngish owner). I'm young, I was wearing smart shorts/polo shirt that day, I used to work for a hifi mag and I purchase high end hifi. She, nor the other two guys in there, ever considered that I might not be a timewaster.

Very interested to hear what shops and brands are sold at CDC now.

Prices: For American brands I'm finding the prices the same in BKK as they are in the UK. Second hand prices are a little cheaper in BKK (they used to be much cheaper, but exchange rate is unfavourable for the last 4 years or so). If you're considering high cost equipment, new, then a trip to Singapore is worthwhile. Rich Thais do indeed fly first class to Singapore, buy their amp/speakers, bring it back as checked in luggage with no tax (100kg weight limit) and they still save a LOT from buying new in BKK this way.

Singapore is not always cheaper.

Bravo, sir. Finally, some sanity re the old 'go to Singapore - even with the airfare, its half what you'll pay in BKK' bullshit. That might have been the case 5 years ago, but I suspect that it has just been blindly repeated in the interim. Yes - I'm aware of the stiff tariff system in Thailand, and I know Customs can hammer me if I choose to import goodies myself, but if Piyanas and Conice can bring gear in at a reasonable price compared to the RRP in British and US shops, why would I risk incurring the wrath of a Customs officer having a bad day ?

Unless you are dealing with an e-tailer who operates out of a shed out in the Sillypore 'burbs, a quick walk around The Adelphi soon makes it obvious that the dealers arent in that building for the view. Cheaper than Oz, I guess, but that isnt saying a hell of a lot - you will still get quoted the 'Gwailo price' (I got that from some Singaporean Head-Fiers, btw - its not simply my own paranoia) and very few of them have an internet presence, much less clearly marked prices a la Piyanas. Some of the Piyanas stock *is* more expensive than I would pay elsewhere, and some of it is cheaper than I can find anywhere else in the region - at least anywhere with a web presence. Wandered around KL one weekend trying to find anything beyond consumer-grade dross from Samsung and the like, to no avail, but next time I'll do some research before I get there. I also hope to get to Seoul one day, but that is intended as more of a bucket list thing.

For those of you who are thinking 'Man, this guy must be on drugs ...', Piyanas have the Ayre Ax7-e for 99K baht.

That's a little over 3300 USD, depending on how close you can get to xe.com's current exchange rate. I challenge anyone to get on a plane at Swampy, fly to a brick-and-mortar retailer and come home with an Ax7-e in their luggage (carry-on, surely ..) for appreciably less than the Piyanas price. I'd be ecstatic if someone flew to, say, Akihabara in Tokyo and bought one back for a thousand USD less than the Piyanas price but guess what ? They pay rent in Akihabara - ruh-roh .... ;)

Sure, Conice' pricing on NAD electronics reflects the difference between buying in Thailand and buying in Britain (duh ..), but who would play the Customs' lottery to try to beat those prices ? Sure, you can buy a box of bits from some guy on Yaowarat Rd - again, happy to hear from someone who has played *that* lottery and won - but 'Warranty, what's that ?'. Ruh-roh.

Apologies if this rant seems a little strident, but I get tired of seeing the same sludge repeated on various fora year after year with nothing in the way of proof. Singapore might have been a stone-cold bargain for electronics once upon a time, but most of the Pantip-style malls I staggered into had the usual Pantip-style crap : mobile phones and laptops. Big freakin' woop. Show me the websites / photos of your gear and the receipts, or stop bagging Thai retailers simply because some of their prices are more expensive than those in other parts of the world.

Hear what you're saying, and it totally depends on the actual piece of equipment in question. My experience were Martin Logan Summits. I could have bought at Audio Excellence, or at the Adelphi. The price difference at the time made it well worth paying the plane ticket price and the customs risk. BUT...that was indeed 5 years ago!

CarlBKK, I need to apologise to the board for the tone of that post - it came out a little more aggressively than I might have liked - but I stand by the guts of it. As you say, one some higher-end gear it may well be cheaper to fly to Singapore, but I get really annoyed at claims that arent backed up with specifics (hence the Ayre in my own post). I've seen similar BS repeated on Singapore-based boards by young guys who have zero firsthand experience to back their claims that 'Singapore is much cheaper !'.

One niche where I think I *can* get a bargain elsewhere is headphones and headphone amps, but I'm not going to Tokyo just for audio - I want to see the sights and experience something other than shopping malls, even if they do seem to be an Aladdin's Cave of every headphone I've ever lusted after. The Japanese also have gear that is sold nowhere else, and that will be interesting. Expensive destination, but you only live once :D

I'm also waiting for the chance to visit Tokyo...need to get there before I'm too old for clubbing too! Many of the more esoteric equipment is deadly expensive so I'm told by fellow Brit enthusiasts who've visited, but if you take a pair or two of some vintage British classics, like Rogers LS3/5a or similar monitors, they'll fight over them for treble you're asking price!

In addition to a bunch of Stax headphones, I'm keen to hear this in Tokyo:

The Koreans build the amps, but the designer is a Japanese guy with something beyond an eye for industrial design - interesting that they claim they designed their casework *before* the Mac Mini was released. I would be far too wary of Apple's legal department to make such a claim in print. ;)
