I have been using Windows Live for several years as my email Manager for receiving, reading, composing and sending all my emails, which includes one Hotmail account and 4 G mail accounts. Although it has had its faults and quirks, by and large it has done the job I wanted it to do after I gave up Outlook Express years ago when the bastards sent me an email and lied that Outlook was going to be shut down. (They subsequently rescinded this decision)

I flirted with Thunderbird for a short while but found it didn't have one important facility - namely to flick quickly through open emails on a full screen. At that time Thunderbird users confirmed to me that it did not have this facility

Recently I reformatted my PC and reinstalled Windows 7 etc. So I had to download and reinstall Windows live which meant I was automatically supplied with the 2011 version.

Since I installed it I have had endless problems with it. It is always freezing up, often but not always with a message that it is 'setting flags' whatever the hell that may mean.

But my biggest problem is that I cannot speedily flick through my unread, open emails on a full screen. Every time I either click 'next' or 'delete' to bring up the next unread email from my inbox, there is a delay of maybe 1-3 seconds, during which time the programme 'bongs' at me to tell me to stop trying to delete or go to the next email until it is ready to take a new instruction. This means that flicking through emails is a long and arduous process that is driving me to distraction - especially when I may have as many as 100 emails to flick through in any one session.

I did not have this problem with my old version of Windows Live and I could rattle through literally hundreds of open emails in a few minutes. Now I get half way through and just give up in disgust, having tried to click on each email to remove it up to 4 times before anything happens and also having to suffer numerous freeze ups and messages telling me it is 'setting flags'.

I would love to get my old version of Windows Live back but am unsure how to do this. I assume it is no longer available.

Has anyone else had similar problems and can they offer any solutions - apart from trying Thunderbird again, which I am seriously considering.

Thanks for any suggestions :)

Be sure to "completely" uninstall WLE 2011 first. This includes any runtime packages (e.g. Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable), if applicable.

Thanks for the link, I will try it out in a few days when I have time to see it all through to a conclusion.

By accident, I have found out how to make Windows Live 2011 work a bit better. Tonight it was driving me really crazy and kept freezing, pinging me with all manner of message windows popping up and was generally unusable. Then I discovered that my internet connection was down. So I went off line in Windows Live and it worked perfectly. I could scroll thru my full page messages in a flash, just like before with W live 2009. Then when the Internet came back on, I went 'live ' in windows live and it was just like before - slow and cranky. So I went off line again and it was fine.

So I have temporary solution - review my emails when in off-line mode, but I will be much happier when I go back to Live 2009.

BTW, what protocol are you using to retrieve messages? Try switching to POP (if using IMAP), see if it fixes the "flags" issue.

Just switched all my gmail accounts to pop servers and it works like a dream.

Problem solved - thanks a million. :)
