Two coastal districts, Hua Hin and Cha-am, have been designated for upgrade into a special administrative zone, designed as a pilot project for sustainable development to mark the 84th Birthday of His Majesty in December.

The Interior Minister will next Tuesday seek the Cabinet approval to merge the two districts under the special administration.

Hua Hin, the location of Klaikangwon Palace, is presently under the provincial jurisdiction of Prachaub Khiri Khan while Cha-am is in Phetchaburi province.

The special administration of Hua Hin and Cha-am is expected to enhance the development of tourism and to streamline the management of royally-initiated projects in the area.

The formation of the special administration will be placed under the direct supervision of the prime minister. Deputy Lord Chamberlain Distorn Vajarodaya is slated to act as adviser to the special administration.

The Hua Hin-Cha-am special administration will come into existence following the enactment of a legislation on special local administrative organisations.

Under the legislation, office holders for the special administration will be elected by local voters in lieu of appointment from the central government.

The special administration is expected to take effect in two stages, comprising the drafting of a master plan this year and the implementation of plans from 2012 to 2017.

Also at the weekly Cabinet meeting, the ministry will seek the approval for the Bt3.9 billion project for underwater power cable from mainland Surat Thani to Samui district.

The project is to meet the rising demand for electricity at the seaside resorts at Samui, Pha Ngan and Koh Tao.

Relevant agencies cast doubt on the project viability, saying it has yet to complete the initial environmental examination report.

Sustainable development...

oh, please.

More road blocks and police checks in and out of Hua Hin and Cha-am I suppose and maybe close down the bars on a Saturday night more often to preserve peace and harmony!

The only possible sustainable development option for Hua Hin is no more development. And that policy should have been adopted a decade ago, when it was still a nice place to visit.

Excatally what I was thinking, sounds like it's getting even more boring, more traffic and more expensie. Starting to look like for me, living in Pattaya out of high season is the way.
