French tourist drowns in Phuket

PHUKET: -- A party among friends turned tragic early this morning when a French tourist entered the surf and drowned at Phuket’s northern Bang Tao Beach.

Lt Col Wicharn Suwannasit of the Cherng Talay Police identified the victim as a 34-year-old Frenchman, whose name is known to the Phuket Gazette but will be withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The Frenchman was a guest at the Best Western Laguna Phuket Resort, located in the Laguna Phuket resort complex in Cherng Talay.

He was among six friends enjoying a night of drinking at a beachfront bar near the Banyan Tree resort.

The party ended at about 3am, after which the group returned to their rooms.

The friends notified hotel security when they realized the man was missing.

They presumed he went for a swim on his own and drowned.

Kusoldharm Foundation rescue workers transported the body to Thalang Hospital for examination.

As of 11am today, French Honorary Consul for Phuket Lucien Rodriguez said he had not received a police report about the drowning and did not know if the family of the deceased had been notified.
