Sir Alex Ferguson does not expect Cristiano Ronaldo to figure in Wednesday's Champions League clash with Villarreal.

The Manchester United winger was excused today's derby clash with City at Old Trafford on compassionate grounds following the death of his father on Tuesday.

Ronaldo's presence was missed as the Red Devils were held to a 1-1 draw by Stuart Pearce's outfit, a result which ended their 100% start to the campaign.

However, despite the setback, Ferguson will not call the 20-year-old back for the trip to Spain and has instead decided to allow Ronaldo to make his own decision about when he returns.

'I don't think Cristiano will be in the squad on Wednesday,' said Ferguson. 'We have just told him to be with his mother until everything is sorted.

'He will pick his own time when to come back.'
