Hi,

I need to buy a fax machine, for a non intensive use (few pages/day).

Any suggestions/remarks/advices about what I should look for.

Would the ones in Lotus/Carrefour be ok ? Or should I go to a more specialised shop ?

Thxs a lot.

If you have a 56k modem, you can use it as a fax. You just need to install fax services (in windows components). Then, if you want to send a fax, just "print" the document/image to the "fax" printer. Receiving is also easy, and the good part is that you can print to your printer (using plain paper).

The ones in the local superstores are OK for your needs, or you can go to the IT places. The smaller ones take up less space but can be a bit of a hassle to use.

I have ADSL. I know about fax services to send fax, but didn't know you could also receive :o

Anyway this sytem to give me really what I need would need to be used with a scanner, and I don't have one. So figured it would be easier to buy a fax machine.

From what I read on the subject I think I'll get an inkjet one, not sure of what other features I should look for?

If you are interested in secondhand I have a Panasonic for sale.

It is three years old but has only been used once.

Uses plain paper. Pm if interested.

I haven't used a fax for ages. Why you don't go for WinFax and a scanner. You can fax both locally internationally (low rates) via WinFax internet faxing as well.

Or you could use jfax.com or efax.com to both send and receive fax (they don't have Thai phone numbers though).

If you are buying an inkjet printer unless you require color for your faxes try and buy a black and white only model as colour inkjets sometimes drink ink automatically cleaning themselves (which uses ink). Personally and based on a recent experience of this I would try and find a reasonably priced laser plain paper fax machine even if it costs a little bit more. It will be in a different class.

i am in the same situation , need a fax machine sometime !

I find true modem do not permit fax send and received via computer, and some documents sent to you need to be sign and return (could do that by print and scan ) but slow process, mainly to go on a 56 modem .

Fax machine is tax deductible anyway if run trough the business!

Difficult to get a fax program who accept files .doc , Winfax do but kind of monster program !

Let us know what you buying, because will need to look at it soon .

I just bought a Panasonic fax machine and find it to be overall excellent.

This new model was just available in Thailand last month, when I bought it and since I have seen it in other locations, but not Lotus or Carrefour.

You can tell which one I bought as it is the only one available in Thailand, I think, that has a cordless hand set.

I use mine in my home so was interested in getting an answering machine along with the fax and the cordless phone, so I could have it at hand whenever I was away from the base unit, which is on my desk.

The corless phone acts as an intercom as well with the base unit, so I can call my Thai on it when we are infront of our own T.V.s in separate rooms

without yelling.

It has an immense capacity at custom programming so you can change almost every feature to meet your needs. Automatic re-dialing if the called number is busy, etc. can be important features cheap machines mght not have.

Paper capacity is important as well. The cordless phone carries a charge for about 10 days and signals you when it is time to re-charge for 6 hours. The antenna tip lights red when there is an incoming call, a great feature when you have earphones on.

Not cheap, I paid 7600 Baht with discount, normal pricing is 8K Baht. A must see even if you decide on another one for cost considerations.

If you are getting inkjet, then I strongly suggest that you make sure you can get generic ink cartridges for it and save on the cost of the ink.

I went to Power Buy this afternoon.

ProThaiExpat, I've seen the Panasonic you're talking about, and it certainly looks good, but 8k was too much for my needs.

So following advices from the salesguy I bought a brother 817 for 3800 THB.

And I'm going back tomorow to change it: the LCD screen just display random letters instead of menu items, and there is no way I can set it up.

Simcity, I will tell you more when I'll get one which is working...

Yeti,

The 4 in one I have just dumped cos it drank ink was a Brother so make sure it doesn't clean heads automatically or else you will be filling the colour tanks at 100bht a pop once a month!!! Even if you never print a single page in colour. It also comes up with a message 'Error 401 unplug machine and refer to a Brother dealer' . six months old, this combined with the experience you have already had would steer me clear of another Brother product.

It is also worth remembering that Brother is a copicat company that copies the big boys ideas , such as Canon and Panasonic , which could work out cheaper but for something thats going to last five years why not buy the real thing?

I didn't know the Brother brand, and when I asked if it was "a good brand", comparing to the Panasonic, the guy told me same same.

Not knowing Brother, I thought they were specialised in fax machines, and that was the reason why I never heard of them.

The price different was not big, I chose it because it was smaller and looked really better than it's equivalent.

Seems it was a mistake.

I went back this morning to Power Buy, and changed for a Sharp NX-P160 (4300 THB).

I was advised against the Panasonic equivalent which seems to have a lot of paper jam problems.

It's working fine, using thermal transfer for the recording, and imaging film for printing.

Will post again in case of unexpected problem...

A word of warning:

The used thermal roll will contain a negative image of every single fax that you have received. So be careful if you chuck it in the bin when it is finished - someone might find it interesting reading.....
