What About The 5Th Death

A fifth tourist has died in Chiang Mai, Thailand, in circumstances eerily similar to New Zealander Sarah Carter's mysterious death - which health officials initially blamed on food poisoning.

American Mariam Soraya Vorster, a 33-year-old from Seattle working as a guide in Chiang Mai, died on January 11 - just over three weeks before 23-year-old Sarah died.

Ms Vorster's husband Tony Pandolo told the Herald his wife was perfectly fit and healthy and became sick with symptoms of food poisoning before she died.

Anyone hear about this?

It was discussed in a different thread here on TV. Different hotel, different symptoms and certainly unrelated.

Mr Pandolo said his wife was staying in a different hotel, but the symptoms were the same.

Anyone know what hotel Mrs. Pandolo was staying in and how close it is to the Downtown Inn?

I don't have all the links in front of me, but basically all the people who died and 3 who were sickened but survived (including a friend of Soraya) all showed "symptoms" of food poisoning. Four who died all had a series of symptoms that lead to enlarged hearts(myocarditis)/heart attacks. Hard to say how all that is unrelated.

Here is a link to the story on 60 minutes, i tried to post it on the main thread but they all appear to be locked now.

I wonder how long it is before the ICT block this website from being viewed within Thailand like they did with the 'big trouble in thailand' series

On the morning of 3 February Sarah Carter, Emma Langland and Amanda Eliason all healthy 23 year olds became violently ill with chest and abdomen pain, vomiting and headaches. Sarah died three days later, Emma almost died and required open heart surgery. In the room next to these girls on the same morning Waraporn Pungmahisiranon was found dead in her room, it appeared that she too had been vomiting prior to her death. On the morning of 19 February in a room below the girls room George Everitt and Eileen Everitt were found dead in their room, it appeared they both died within minutes of each other. In all of these cases doctors stated the cause of death was Myocarditis or enlargement of the heart. However, the doctors could not say what caused the myocarditis. It is known the three girls from New Zealand did not have any heart problems before checking in to the hotel, it is also known that the Everitts did not have any known heart problems before checking in. We do not know anything about Ms. Pungmahisiranon health history so we do not know if she did or did not have myocarditis prior to checking.

The 60 Minutes News team that investigated the rooms by renting one and going into several of the other rooms to gather evidence allege that they found traces of chlorpyrifos. This is a chemical commonly used to get rid of bed bugs. The directions state once you apply the chemical on the beds and let them sit for 24 hours in an open ventilated room, you need to wash the poison off before using the bed. Chlorpyrifos poisoning could be the result of not washing off the chemical. Furthermore, over exposure to this chemical can cause myocarditis and there is a long record where such exposure can kill persons from one hour to several days later. It depends on how bad your exposure was and how resistant you are to chlorpyrifos. This explains why the older and weaker victims died within hours of exposure and the younger healthy victims died days later or recovered. This chemical was also the cause of two deaths in southern Thailand two years ago. So it is not too much out of the realm of possibilities that the other deaths in Chiang Mai Soraya Vorster age 33, Bill Mah age 59 and an as yet unnamed French woman that had the same exact thing happen to them also died of the same thing only it was other hotels doing the same thing or using the same pest control company. That is a lot of tourist to die in just a two month time frame in Chiang Mai. So the question now is who is the pest control company that serves these hotels and is it the same company?
