I have K-lite codec pack with the media player classic video player installed on my xp machine.

I have downloaded the subs from the Thai sub website but no matter how hard I try I cannot load them. I have tried dragging and dropping them at the same time, loading them after the film starts, absolutely everything.

Can someone please advise me an easy and simple way to load the thai subs or any subs into a movie I have downloaded.

Make sure subtitles have the *same* file name as the movie file, and put subs in the same folder as movie.

You need not change the subtitle extension (.srt, .ssa, etc).

Do you drag and drop the folder hence loading them together or do it seperately. How can they sync up if you dont do this....?

As mentioned, the name of the subtitle file must be exactly the same as the movie except for the extension. When the movie, .avi or other loads, the media player automatically looks for the sub file based on the movie name. No need to drag-drop both as it would be redundant.

Place the sub and movie file together in the same folder. Assuming they have identical file names, the sub should load automatically as you start playback.

May I ask do you name the folder the same as the files insdie it and also what players do you use, it could be that perhaps....??

Also does it always sync up..? if the film downloaded has the entrance at the beggining eg. dreamworks, warner bros, mgm, how does the subtitles file know when to start...?

Sync depends on the framerate of the encoded movie.

Therefore, it's a good idea to know this bit of information when looking for subs.

Yep. One potential sync problem also is a PAL movie but NTSC subs. If you do find subs out of sync you can try downloading from another site. Or, you can use VLC which has track/sub synchronization control or SubSync which I believe is based on VobSub.

Or you can just get the ISO.

I notice srt subtitle files don't display in Windows Media Player if the movie is mp4 format, only avi files accepted? Anyone know reason? Works ok in other media players.

^ You need to install DirectVobSub to get .srt subs working in WMP.

Sorry I also wanted to mention when I open up the ssa file I see the same strange text in notepad but when I open the file in Word I see the Thai text.

An option is to go to a site that have subtitles (srt/ssa) files that you can download and try to replace the ones for the movie that are there now. If you don't need the subtitle, you can turn them off in VLC. Is the movie in English (spoken) or what subtitle language did you need?

//edit - ok, just saw your edited post on Thai subtitles.

I just popped up my copy of VLC. Under "Preferences" > Subtitles and OSD the fonts and encoding can be set there.
