I was recommended to try out Joomla for building and running a website I want to build. Just wanted to get any feedback on it as to ease of use, safety, etc. I have signed up for the free demo version for 30 days to try it.

Any tips ?

Cheers Dunc ;)

Joomla is free software, no need to sign up for any free demo for it. Maybe you're referring to a commercial plugin?

Joomla is one of the most popular CMS systems at this time. It's generally good but of course has it's quirks and a bit of a learning curve.

Joomla itself is generally safe, but some plugins are not so well written and allow it to get hacked easily.

Many templates are free and look great online. Joomla is becoming increasingly popular. I have used it for a website for over one year now. I have had no problems, but with my setup it is not always easy to edit pages in terms of spacing; getting single spacing can be difficult. But I have managed. I strongly advise you to hire a person to set it up for you. Basically, I selected a template then hired a local Thai to construct a website. After that, he taught me how to manage the site and update information (pretty easy once you figure it out). I would never go back to the old way of doing things.

The demo is for hosting on their server not the software itself. After 30 days can continue using their server at a charge or move it to your own hosting site.

I'm making my first Joomla based website at the moment, based on the free "YouGrids" template and hosted with GoDaddy for the grand sum of 27 pounds for the year, including my .com name registration! It's a great system, but takes a bit of getting your head around to start with!

If you send me a pm I will send you a good pdf book to get you going. I'm working through it at the moment...

PS My site is at ((URL removed per forum rules))

Joomla is extremely powerful and as a result a little complicated, but fairly easy once you have figured it out.

Before you start, read up on and get your head around the differences between sections and categories.

Then build your pages, create some menus and play around with different addon modules.

If you get into it and find yourself overwhelmed try wordpress.

Wordpress is just as good a system (in a different way) - not as adaptable but far simpler to use.
