So Were You Caught Out By Thaivisa April Fools Prank?

People hardly need more to get worked up about without fake news to add to the already incendiary nature of discussions here on Thaivisa.com; I do not exclude myself.

There is also the issue that really nothing is too amazing or ridiculous to come up in this place. It leaves no litmus test to tell fact from fiction.

It may be bit irresponsible as well, since quite a few people may have actually based important life decisions on this piece of "news."

And finally, it wasn't really that funny.

...

BTW, I am considerably younger than 50 and am philosophically opposed to marriage.

Another thought to go along with your point of irresponsible;

Apparently not all that have some control over a media source has learned the valuable lesson from Orson Welles radio broadcast, War Of The Worlds. Google that for the ramifications caused and the pain and suffering on the general public that resulted from that broadcast. Is the lesson here, George, that we turn off TV in March and April each year, or is the lesson that you and yours consider the Thai govt has no bounderies, or limits to what they will impose on their own people and foreigners visiting and living here, and TV should be a little more self governing about their humor, just as we must be self governing about what we politically say here.

Althouhg i knew it was an April fools joke and repsonded as such. ONe can think it could happne as it is implimneted in Cambodia.

ONlY problem is where would all the essan girls get the money for new buffalo's and homes if it ws true???

:coffee1: I think there should be swear jar, all the money can go to charity. Anybody using the words Issarn girls and buffalos (especially the sick variety) in the same sentance, should have to part with 100 baht.

Comments like that make you sound a lot more like a country bumpkin than most of the people from Issarn I've met!

For the record, I'm waaaaaaay under 50 but did happen to get the memo in my inbox and figured Thailand must be following suit with Cambodia for once.

1. I get enough stupid freakin pranks from every other moron who actually takes time out of their day to mess with people on April 1st.

2. Doesn't matter what day it is, deliberately putting people in a false state of emotion is fcuked up.

3. You (ThaiVisa) is supposed to be a reputable news agency, KNOW YOUR PLACE.

That is all jap.gif

:D Since when? Tv is a forum that has topical news section. Hardly a news agency!

Anyway, seeing as all major news agencies (news agencies not forums) have in the past also participated in April fools jokes, then it would seem it is you that needs to find his place, in the real world where people have a sense of humour!

I call it the Kathoey syndrome. They just grab something on first glance only to discover once they lovingly unwrap the package at home it is something else, and usually possessing a size factor that further humiliates them ........

I did not know that straight people ar so stupid (just joking).

Regarding the April fools joke the fact that among others, my post which clearly warned of this nonsense, has been deleted by a moderator within minutes shows some lack of fairness. Does Thai Visa still deserve our contributions? Without us posters they are dead.

That would be a question only you can answer! Obviously TVF was, as in previous years, deleting the posts of people that wanted to spoil the joke before it had time to run its course. It appears that a sense of humor, at least one day out of the year, is almost mandatory to be a poster here. If you don't have one then you may find it difficult to post :)

Fair enough, but I think part of the joke would also be that some more alert and less concerned people would be able to dismantle it. I felt sorry for all these straight males over 50...... Joke: yes, distress people: no.

And for all those males who panicked: Now you know how it feels being gay in the so called LOS where our community is tolerated, but looked down and without specific legal protection.

These are the only two posts of yours I've read, so I was just wondering. Do you tell everyone you are gay in every post you make?

Certainly showed who has a sense of humour. Plenty of sanctimony and bitterness to go around too.

I don't know what was funnier, those who are still worked up 24hrs later, or those still calling us on it after 100s of others.

Funny? So you think it was funny? And now you make nnuendo and derogatory comments towards your readers? lamentable

it was damned funny to see so many self righteous, sanctimonious, self opinionated TV members proven to be out and out morons to their peers

that was so much funnier than the joke itself

congrats to George and TV for ''outing'' them

you know who you are...........

You forgot to thank George for the follow up........................outing the smug know it alls........... by starting this thread........:) .

Funny, I did not really see this joke as outing the smug know it alls, but rather George poking fun in a sly fashion at the Thai government, which issues so many wacky statements I am never quite sure if I have entered the Twilight Zone.... :-)

Although a cracker of an April fools (which just seem to get better every year imo) the funniest part was the replies from a few obviously superior guys claiming the new law was down to the jealousy of Thai men for them stealing their "top" women. Now that WAS a funny joke :D

Agreed. I will not disparage men that choose to come to Thailand, and even wed someone that is both much younger and also usually less well educated, but to think that the 'elite' in any form are worried about how someone marries is kinda weak. Again, this year's April Fool's joke has to be the best yet!

OK I HAVE engaged brain (thanks so much for your highly intellectual advice there), gone back to the original and found only a questionable Thai surname as a hint. Plus the very formal announcement that this measure could become law within a month.

Does nothing amaze YOU about Thailand in such respects? Nothing Amazes me after so very many years.

I do note that neither you nor any other poster (of comparable high status and multi thousand messages) has responded to my challenge: why should anyone believe this website's "news" reporting ever again?

You and your ilk - who doubtless would laugh at someone opening a door and having a can of paint fall on their head - have much to learn about how to treat readers.

And humour.

And good taste.

Whoops, sorry. Better engage your brain before tackling intangibles such as that!

My "ilk"? LOL

I do admit I enjoy the odd "pratfall" but in this case ....... it wasn't one :) ((Well it was for a few!-- I'd add of your ilk --- but that wouldn't be funny, or in good taste))

Look at when the cabinet was supposed to review -- and when the law was to come into effect :)

I still will not disparage men that come to Thailand to find a partner decades younger than them, or that choose to marry, or that choose to have children late in life --- which is, of course, what the post you were quoting was talking about :)

Now that it is about 10:20pm ... I think I will disengage the brain and open a beer and have a chuckle at the expense of people that don't have a soh :)

I am amazed as all it took was to read the full article and to be able to read that last instruction (I noticed the bold faced letters straight off as this is highly unusual for any article here on Thaivisa). Reminds me of the college exam with 20 questions (all general) in which the first says to read ALL of the questions first before answering any of them. Well, the last one says to just put your name on the paper, answer no questions, and to turn it in . . . . Funny to some students and, well, for the more compulsive ones, frustrating and embarrassing. Oh well. Takes all kinds to make this world of people so interesting, eh?

Fooled many of us. It was a joke. Thai government never even thought about enacting such a law. Until now that is. Apparently since hearing about this they are considering it. Great job.

Keep up the good work.

A very sick and stupid april fool's....it was all to believable knowing Thailand and how it loves to copy (in this instance Cambodia) and is anti-farang people but pro-farang money. ThaiVisa...you should be ashamed of yourselves for pulling such a prank.

i will believe TV as a news source on any other day but April 1st

i would laugh if a can of paint fell on their head, or slipped on a banana or if their pants were on fire

so i admit that maybe do not have good taste and will prove it by being drawn into responding to this over-reactionary nonsense but i do have a sense of humor and you are so funny...............

I thought it was freaking hilarious. Good one.

I think that some of the people who profess this to be in bad taste are just upset that they turned out to be more gullible than others. And as they can't be mad at themselves, now, can they, so they push that anger on the forum.

It was rather eye-opening, though, to read some of the frankly racist drivel being posted by some posters.

A good April Fools Day prank has to be somewhat believable but only in retrospect is proven to be ridiculous. This one fit the bill.

My hat's off to the folks at ThaiVisa for such a great prank!

(As far as the link goes, I've gotta love the gorilla with iPads story!)

I am as much into April Fool jokes as the next guy and did have a small grin at this one. But I have to disagree that in retrospect it looks ridiculous. After all, they have already proposed this rule in Cambodia and Thailand is known to like to impose extra rules on foreigners. And in good Thai tradition, it would have been a rule that could be circumscribed but getting married abroad. And it would have put some women (and possibly some men), those who like to call themselves feminists, in the same boat as the current unelected and unrepresentative government. The trouble with this joke (and many jokes like it that concern Thailoand) is that it is just possibly true! And that is why even in retrospect no such joke looks rediculout.

This will never happen, because the Cambodians beat them to it, it also made the news, showing how gullible farangs can be, by jumping the gun without thinking, that's why we get fooled and get treated like fools, thank you all, for showing our true colors, i expect ,the prices for things will double for us very soon. which reminds me of the old saying, "If you can be fooled, you can be F*****.....

"April Fools been and gone , your the fool for carrying it on"....... was i think how the rhyme went for people who continued an April fool once it had been revealed.

Essentially many many people on the site ( myself included) cottoned on to it being an April fool wind up... however thier posts were instantly removed by the moderators....

So the only fool is Thai Visa...

On a personal note , I think its a bit of a worry as I like to read the Thai News so I actually have an informed/independent view of whats happening here by people that live and work here and usually the news is very accurate.... IF I wanted to read spoof news there are thousands of sites that do that.....

So lets hope that this doesnt become a trend of every now and then with Thai Visa team throwing in a bit of deliberate mis information to wind up all the farangs on the site....although it is quite amusing to listen to some users crazed ravings.... but i am sure there are better ways of getting your site hits up.
