I know a few places where you would justifiably get your head punched in for saying that.

That place isn't one of them.

Well OK, maybe not best to come right out with saying it while standing in the establishment, but they all barfine.

But off topic now, I've always wondered how western women could bring themselves to frequent such establishments, I always thought like you, they pretended not to understand what was happening around them.

Unlike you, I am not judgemental when it comes to other people. I don't care what business arrangement people make with each other. All I care about is if the person is friendly to me and somewhat interesting. In Thailand I can openly talk with anyone at just about any time. I'm not "hitting" on anybody and I don't need a partner... of either sex, or should I say "gender", because Thailand clearly has several genders. I can't do that in Canada where everyone pretty much sticks to themselves or travel as a group of couples. Besides, I'm a freely admitted "snow bird". I enjoy hiking and biking which I can't do in Canada's winter.

You're not Anne Murray are you? biggrin.png

No, but I wish I was. She's a nice person. And, the popularity of her song came about by Californians who misinterpreted her song and thought she meant drugs.

Drugs?

Spread your tiny wings and fly away,

And take the snow back with you where it came from on that day.

The one I love forever is untrue,

And if I could you know that I would fly away with you.

Yeah....I guess I can see it, they thought everything was drug related. wink.png

Neither am I, I was merely stating facts about the Half Moon bar (but oddly you were judgmental about me!).

And it is surprisingly refreshing to hear of a woman from the west who is open-minded about prostitution, and places of prostitution.

Seems to me, like others have pointed out, "she" is a he having a laugh.

One of their old regulars did actually get punched out (slapped actually) for being a mouthpiece and talking like you are unfortunatley for him the girl was not a bargirl and her husband overheard what he said.

Best be respectful whichever bar you are in you just never know thumbsup.gif

I was merely trying to warn a respectable western lady about the possible problems of visiting such a place.

If you want to pick some sort of argument, please do it by PM and not in a public forum.

Wow! 560 replies and still counting! Now, let's see, if one were to lay these replies end to end on the road from the moat, would they reach the Eastern end! biggrin.png

Good. Never was a fan of the place.

Was that the one owned by the gold digging witch Apple?

hahaha! Not sure if she's even the current owner or a previous one, but yes.. there was a manageress there that I truly didn't get along with. Also meddled in her staff's life way too much.

I think when she came out with that song it was years before the drug culture fit into it. It had no drug conatation at that time,

If you like hiking you can do that in Canada in the winter. They call it snow shooing.whistling.gif

We are getting a bit of track here but Snowbird was written by Gene MacLellan, the same guy who wrote the Gospel song "Put your hand in the hand.....".

Snowbird has been recorded by well known druggies like Perry Como, Loretta Lyn, and Chet Atkins.

Saw him a few times before he died (maybe 20 years ago). He used to perform in Churches/Prisons/Retirement Homes and the like. I was in none of thesewhistling.gif

I like Loi Kroh....but this is getting a bit serious now. If we keep on posting at this rate could equal or better the "Rain" thread. We have to get things in perspective here. Is Loi Kroh really more important than the "Rain" thread ?

Can we start a new thread perhaps "Loi Kroh in the Rain" or "The Rain in Loi Kroh". or "My Reign in Loi Kroh:, or the "Reign of Rain in Loi Kroh". Or combine both threads, that way perhaps this thread could outlive the cockroaches. A fitting tribute to the two critical day to day issues facing Thaivisa CM forum posters. A monument for future historians and potential expats so that they can readily identify and study the movement of the times.

Still have not seen Keith Richards on Loi Kroh (maybe he is a Cheap Charlie at Veerachai Court), ...but did see Jesus and John Wayne are at the Marriott.

Thanks for the humour, mamborobert. Yes, this topic did take on a new life. It just points out how valuable the road is to the population here. Would any other road in Chiang Mai draw as much attention? What about the kareoke bars along Chang Klan road? The Nimmenhamen road topic sort of died out. Maybe the hooker bars can all move over their because it's going to be a one way to... to... to where?

The Chiang Mai Saloon used to have a really good burger until they changed meat suppliers a few years ago. I stopped going there after that and haven't heard anything to lure me back.

"Population here" referring to what?

Yes it would.

Just not among a good part of the Thaivisa demographic.

Each girly bar has it's own attractions. Sometimes customers may feel like some good music, a few drinks and pretty young girls to look at, or some female company and does not necessarily mean that all men who frequent the bars are sex-pats or sex tourists or only there just for the girls. it`s probably for a mixture of several things that the bars offer.

However, these adult entertainments do attract the tourists that enjoy some social, nightlife and adult entertainments while on holiday and for the ex-pats residing here. Also taking into consideration that the girly bars have for many years been a part of the main attractions of Thailand, as much or perhaps even more so than all the other tourist themes Thailand has to offer.

My point is, that the Chiang Mai adult entertainment and Western tourist social amenities, such as restaurants, beerbars and clubs should be rejuvenated in Chiang Mai. Why? Because it`s good for business and for boosting the tourist trade in Chiang Mai, instead of just focussing what`s left as some sad remnants of what once was, in some sorry looking run down street.

CM Saloon is one of my favorites for burgers. They have 2 different burgers. A cheaper local one with beef from Northern Farms and a more expensive one made from imported Aussie beef. The Northern Farms meat is far superior and is a really good burger. But of course most beef in the world tastes better than the Aussie crap.

However, avoid the burgers at the CM Saloon inside the moat. The beef is routinely very undercooked. Not a good thing for ground beef. The LK branch of CM Saloon does a much better job.

I grabbed the opportunity to "Like" your post, because so few opportunities come along, but you make some good points here. The only comment I have really is that 'should be rejuvenated' sounds like some sort of local government guidance, planning or support. Government rarely does that when it comes to development, with the exception of the most basic laws (can't build a 10 floor condo next to a temple in the old town, and can't start a pig farm on the empty plot of land on Huay Kaew). But any sort of area planning basically doesn't happen. That's both a blessing and a curse; it's a blessing because you get this evolutionary development model where businesses are tried, fail, something else is started, and you end up with the very diverse and interesting collection of shops and entertainment that you see all over Thailand. Compare that to large areas in modern European cities which turn completely dead and boring, with the only thing 'different' being the community mosque, courtesy of the local socialist/social-democrat folks on the council. Be careful what you wish for.

So I think if there is a business opportunity for a more upmarket, (dare I say it) 'boutique' girlie bar, then it will happen. It happened for many the small 100 baht 'decrepit' guesthouses.. However here again I'm careful what I wish for. Case in point: Sukhumvit Soi 7/1 in Bangkok. This soi had a lot of small one-shophouse bars very similar to most bars in Chiang Mai, including the prices; very cheap and cheerful. Places like Busabar Bar, run by one of the very few Farang bar owners I actually liked, and who IMHO understood how to run a Thai bar in a more 'laissez-faire' manner that keeps the staff happy, which in turn makes the customers happy. Well, have a look there now, they're all being replaced with very fancy hostess bars with marble interiors, matching prices and (worse) matching highly commercial 'extract all baht you can' policies, along with the usual draconian staff policies with targets and fines for everything.

I think I'm going to enjoy the current, well worn in and in-need-of-renovation bars we currently have for a little bit longer.

Business is crap on Loi Kroh, I wonder how often some of you that moan about it go down there.

It's a fun, easy going and fairly quiet spot to warm up for the night. Then the night kicks off in earnest elsewhere. I don't really mind if bar owners are bringing in tons of money or not, as long as it's enough to keep the circus going.

Number 1 bar moved out of town ages ago,

No they didn't, they opened a second place. The old location is still there and doing just fine. (Better than the new location actually, from casual observation when driving past.)

The last time I was there they were using Number 1 for storage and "Number 2" was still open. Have they now reopened the "east" side?

And a later poster says the Butterfly is open again, so i assume it's changed hands, since it was definitely shut last week; I went past it on New Years eve and it had the shutter down and For Sale sign up. I don't know who owns it, but I always found it a genial enough bar to sit and have a drink or two.

It was definitely open on Friday the 4th. I am pretty sure it was also open on Thursday the 3rd. I do recall a police officer showing up outside there on Friday for a brief chat with someone.

No, everything is now in the newer/bigger place at the same location. The newest location is in Pa Daed, South of Aom Muang road. Those are the two locations. (Number 1 Bar/Bistro in Loy Kroh Soi 1, and Number 1 Beer Garden on the Pa Daed road.)

I wouldn't read too much into using the shack on one side for storage; the main place is already one of the biggest bars in the area.
