PHUKET: -- To mark World Red Cross Day this Sunday, a nationwide "Discover the Volunteer Within You” blood drive is calling out for blood donors in Phuket and the Andaman region.

World Red Cross Day was designated May 8 by the International Federation of the Red Cross (IFRC) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in memory of Red Cross founder Henri Dunant, who was born on that day.

The Phuket Chapter of the Thai Red Cross Society in conjunction with the Phuket Regional Office of the National Blood Center will hold the primary drive from May 8 to 14 at the Phuket Regional Blood Center.

The center is collecting blood for patients in Ranong, Phang Nga, Krabi, Phuket, Trang and Satun provinces.

People in the O-negative blood group are particularly encouraged to donate.

In exchange for their blood, donors will receive an official World Red Cross Day pin engraved with the slogan, “Saving Lives, Changing Minds”.
