Just been looking at some old photos......

Does anyone remember the Domino Bar just down from the Montri Hotel.

I spent quite a lot of time in there about 14 years ago.

And what about the ABC Bar run by a Dutch guy, next time I went back to Chaing Mai both were gone..

Ah those happy times.....

The Black Cat went eons ago, when Tony finally went broke, and "sold" out to Brian "Mr. Personality" Hubbard. It sort of ran for a few years then finally folded. Taken over briefly by Marcel (ex Inter Inn) then bought out by Somchai (John's Place) The place has always had a cloud over it on account of a murder in the upstairs rooms over twenty years ago. Just another chapter in Chiangmai's chequred history :o

Old Black Cat location has recently 'morphed' into the 'Leprechaun' run by a very pleasant Irish guy. Beautifully rufurbed new bar serving excellent draught Guinness as it should be + attached restaurant. Down a couple of quiet dark ones before hitting the mayhem on the streets outside!

The Domino has changed names to True Blue, but very simular food and lack of ambience, however, the Scottish owner has just finished extensive renovations and added air-con recently.

The ABC Bar moved over in front of The Mae Ping Hotel years ago, but I haven't checked lately to see if it is still there.

The Laughing Leprechaun has very good - upscale - pub food and the owner is quite a nice guy.

The Laughing Leprechaun.....Could this be an Irish Bar :o

The Laughing Leprechaun.....Could this be an Irish Bar  :D

I'm afraid that The Laughing Leprechaun was the last one that downtown needed, however another 'Irish pub" is opening almost directly across the street from it.

Irish Pubs, phoney Starbucks type coffee shops and used bookshops are the latest craze of busineses for brain-dead farangs to copy so that no one can make a profit.

Chiang Mai is becoming infested with all three. :o

I haven't been out much for a while but two close Aussie friends of mine used to run True Blue and Up2You bar just behind it. Didn't know about the new owner. I used to be on the darts league for Up2You, do they still have the dart league matches here (Chiangmai)?

I arrived in Chiangmai just as Black Cat was shutting down. Went to Brian's place grand opening and he was a likeable guy, just a little standoffish. I also have a history with Somchai. My VIP card was #2 and a free beer everytime I visited (which at that time was pretty much every night). :D

Ahh, the memories. :D

You mean the brothers. Good lads who I haven't seen in a long time.

The darts league is still going strong.

Maurice the male nurse got married and was going back and forth to Oz on a regular basis. I haven't seen him in over a year or maybe 2. I believe his brother David is back in Oz.

Morris was a great guy.

Didn't know that he had a brother.  :o

David (Morris' brother) was really a great guy too. They had completely different personalities and hard to believe they were brothers. David was the really tall lanky guy. Do miss seeing them. Took me a long time but was finally able to beat Morris in a dart game, to his surprise (and mine). :D

You must have put something in his beer. Maurice wasn't/isn't a bad darts player. You may recall David had the mobile hamburger stall.

Anyone remember the VW camper van that was used as a cocktail bar.

It was parked near the Night Bazaar area.

Outside a Tattoo shop named "Tattoo by Bastard" .....honest.

Hello, paulnuek...

... as a newcomer to to this city, I'm a bit curious - why do you spell it: "Chaing Mai" ?

Hurrah for the bookshops, at least, it gives me something to read, while sitting in the bar watching the working-world get on-with-it without me :D

Seriously, the availability of reasonably-priced 2nd-hand bookstores was one ofmy criteria, in choosing CM to settle in. I suspect it's characteristic of backpacker/farang-ki-nok culture ! :D Wonder what else attracted TV-members to here ?

Another blast from the past, taken circa 1988 with these two AA dropouts :o

A very young looking Abe not long after he finished working in Oman and Skipper many years before he passed away. I reckon this pic was taken early 1990's possible at the original Moon Garden.

Don't want to seem padantic but I am fairly sure that Nu's bar in the BarBarian Centre wasn't there in 1988/9. The BarBarian Centre wasn't there either then. I think it started in late 1990.

I certainly miss old Skipper. Had some great times together, epecially the time Andy Mau (Scotland), Skipper and I drove to Phitsanuloke for the weekend. Andy left our drinking hole in search of a friend for the night and never returned. In fact he didn't return to his hotel either. Next day Skipper and I did a search of the hospitals and police station to no avail. We stayed one more night in the hope that he would turn up. Again no sign of him so by chance Skipper and I called Domino's in CM and were informed that Andy was sitting in the Blue Sky Bar. As it turned out he did find a friend who took him to a cheap hotel where he fell asleep and awoke sometime later with only 500 baht of the original 8,000 he had the started with. Not knowing where he was or how he got there all he could say to the staff at the hotel was Chiang Mai, Chiang Mai so they kindly put Andy on a bus bound for Chiang Mai. Skipper and I drove back to CM quite relieved and joined Andy at the BBC.

Andy was another gentleman no matter how inebriated he was. Sadly passed away a few years ago.
