I had the pleasure of having a contract which involved writing copy on 3D printers some time ago. The principle behind it is very simple, it is 'printed' in layers and each layer is "printed" on the layer beneath. Not too dissimilar to lego, only the building blocks are not pre-fabricated (and much, much smaller)

It is said to be so accurate that it could 'print' body replacement parts as fine as capillaries.

Read an article quite a while ago about a guy who made a working grandfather clock with a 3d printer. Took him a couple of tries, and it took 24 hours (or so) to "print"....but it started ticking as soon as the pendulum was swung.
