In fact it was getting so big the perimeter wall was in danger of become part of it.

The pond is pretty big and has a stream running into it, the shear weight of the water is undermining the bank all round so clearly Something had to be done!!

I ordered up 14 tons of granite rock and around 20 bags of cement. So far we are making good progress at stopping the erosion I just hope its going to last.

The pond had to be drained down, here are some pictures of the pond as it was the erosion and the progress up to today.

Thanks TommyDee, We finally finished, phew.....

And you galvanized me into putting up some pictures.

The whole job took three of us three weeks to drain the water down about 1 meter back fill the erosion, place the rocks and cement them in place.

We used 28 tons of granite, and 8 bags of cement.

We purchased two truckloads Granite direct from the quarry delivered to our gate for 200 baht a ton, the cement was 100 baht a bag.

Quotes for getting it done ranged from 3000 to 6000 baht a meter, our cost of doing it ourselves was less than baht 7000.

Erosion is a tough problem even one edge of our pond with a 4:1 slope is starting to erode. It's wind-wave action as well as fish and other animals. Other than a real shallow slope vetiver grass (ya fek - you can often find it free; ask around) can be a good stabilizer if you don't want to use concrete.

Yes were astounded at how much had been eaten away under the bank, I realized something had to be done, whilst one day feeding the fish the bank I was standing on just collapsed into the pond. We did not want at first to use concrete and tried a shallow slope also grass but had not heard of vetiver grass, ya fek, maybe I should have asked on here before it got too bad, would have saved a lot of work.

To answer TommyDee, no we pulled back the sand soil and packed it tightly into the bank then placed granite rocks on top of it and grouted each rock in place. (I think its called riprap) We reasoned that there is no one going to walk on it and its just got stop the wind wave and animals. As it turned out you can in fact walk on it, hope its going to be OK at least for a few years, we don't want to have to do that again!!
