Police came under attack from petrol bombs hurled by rioting mobs in North London last night as hundreds took to the streets following the shooting of a man by Scotland Yard marksmen.

Patrol cars, a shop and a double-decker bus were set ablaze and there were reports of looting amid scenes reminiscent of the violent unrest in the same area 26 years ago when PC Keith Blakelock was hacked to death.

Last night the Tottenham area erupted once again as more than 100 officers and specialist riot police faced crowds of more than 500 people protesting about the death of Mark Duggan, who lived on the estate and was described last week by police sources as a ‘gangster’.

Resident David Akinsanya, 46, who was on the scene, said: Its really bad. There are two police cars on fire. Im feeling unsafe. It looks like its going to get very tasty. I saw a guy getting attacked.

I'm sure it was getting very tasty, but if this guy thought so, then he should be arrested.

And here's a caption from a photo

A shot is attacked by arsonists on Tottenham High Road during protests tonight a quarter of a century after the infamous Broadwater Farm riots

Trying to burn a sixteen-pound iron ball? They must be gooners.

And from the Telegraph

(excerpt)

The disturbances followed a peaceful protest in which around 120 people marched from the Broadwater Farm area to the police station.

They were voicing concerns over the death on Thursday of Mark Duggan, 29, who was killed after an apparent exchange of fire with officers. After the shooting, a police officer’s radio was found to have a bullet lodged in it, suggesting he may have narrowly escaped being struck.

Police had been attempting to carry out an arrest under Operation Trident, which deals with gun crime in the black community, according to the Independent Police Complaints Commission, which is investigating the death.

Well it seems this lad was carrying a gun and used it to attemp to kill the police who had surrounded him.

It also appears he wasn't quite the full shilling at the time. Bit difficult to do a psychiatric report now though isn't it?

Very unfortunate incident but at face value its hard to see what other action the police could have taken.

:o Boater, I am suprised!!!!! There were no Muslim thugs in your report!!!!

Apparently Jamie Oliver will be down there tonight looking for new talentted chefs for his Fifteen restaurant. He loves a good photo oppo innit!

When I see things like this I think it does not matter what the trigger was.

It shows folks are on the edge & ready to go postal. I wouldn't doubt if many rioters thought it was an uprising against the government & just jumped in.

Hard to believe so many would give a toss about this Mark Duggan fella

Broadwater Farm Estate is a black ghetto in North London.

Think of similar places in the States - parts of Detroit, for instance.

No schooling, no job, no money, so the kids turn into junkies or dealers (or both). It is a 'no-go' area for police (one hacked to death there around 1995 after another riot, caused by demonstrators against the arrest of an illegal immigrant).

Call me naive but I just can't imagine police no-go areas except on futuristic sci-fi movies.

There is nowhere I wouldn't walk around here. For sure, some areas can be a bit dodgy and I wouldn't advise a woman or a rich-looking poncey guy to walk alone, but the Police can go anywhere, any time.

There is something to be said for a nanny state.

No go area is probably a bit strong. No want to go is more like it! biggrin.gif

Thanks HB did not know that.

I think these riots are common enough in the US that some people know to take advantage of a situation to get a new TV or just cause trouble. When I lived in Florida there was a riot because the cops killed some guy with a choke hold. The people rioted and looted in the streets of his neighborhood. On the news they interviewed a local resident and she said the looters were from other neighborhoods. Figures, why destroy your own local shops.

Well I'm in East London now....the local Tesco is shutting its doors...as I walked through the underpass from Leytonstone to Wanstead I encountered four policemen and the remains of an arson attempt....

Police sirens every couple of minutes now...the pubs are shut and all the shops.

Shit I wanted a curry delivered as well...laugh.gif

Everyone knows about Rodney King (and prior to that was the looting when the big blackout occurred....but that is a bit differrent), but I am a bit suprised that you talk about "common enough"., even though it is a relative term, I wouldn't have thought that this sort of thing happens more than once in a decade. Britain had Brixton.....and that was ages ago.
