Correct Tool For Floor Tank Cover

Recently we had the toilet tank under the house cleaned out, but as the cover hadn't been removed for a long time the engineer had trouble getting it off so used a screwdriver to prise the cover off. Of course in doing so he's buckled the cover. So I went to get a new one, but he couldn't get it to fit into the threads of the hole, neither could I, but the size is correct. The original cover now leaves small gaps at the edges (as buckled), which we did complain about, so the engineer got some plastic bagging and jammed it in between the cover and hole - fixed he said.

So, is there a particular tool that has the two prongs that can be used to push down on the new cover/lid at the same time as turning so that the new cover goes on correctly? Or an alternative method of doing this. Attached photo of the cover for reference.

yes there is a tool..never seen one though...maybe a marine store would have one as these sort of covers are on many boats for fuel and water tanks...you could get a local welder to make one up with some bar stock and a couple of bolts or re bar..

..sounds like your "poop engineer" burred the female threads.

take a close look...gentle even tapping of the new cover may enable it to get a a start on the threads .

..since it is probably brass judicious use of a file or old hacksaw blade may also enable the new cover to get a start..try rubbing a candle over threads too ( the wax will lubricate and aid future removal)...patience will prevail I suspect. If you are uncomfortable with doing it yourself ..buy a box of beer and find a Farang DYI'er maybe...good luck

It is really not that hard for worker to remove and replace the entire unit if you can obtain some tiles to match for repair. We changed to SS covers many years ago.

Unfortunately patience didn't prevail, having spent almost an hour trying to get the new cover on, even cleaning all the treads that had mould build up and using oil. It goes on so far, then seems to lose the thread and pops off again. This is why I thought there might be a tool that can be pushed down on whilst turning. I thought the engineer would have something like that, given that its his job, but no. Perhaps I can find the same tile again and get another engineer to replace the whole thing. Just so inconvenient at more cost. Out of interest, what does a SS cover look like? The old cover that is there just now is buckled, so has plastic bagging to plug the gaps in the sides where the engineer levered off the cover. It also now has sharp edged that stick out. I'd rather just have the new one in place.

The stainless steel covers are exactly the same size and basic construction but appear to be heaver material and retain there looks very well. More expensive but look much better in/around home.

or just install the old one in silicone or Sikaflex

exactly...shave off some thread from the cap with a file or grinder and stand on it with some silicone Sika" or similar..
