KUALA LUMPUR (BNO NEWS) -- A Malaysian policeman was sentenced to five years in prison on Thursday for killing a teenager during a car chase last year, the official Bernama news agency reported on Friday.

The fatal shooting happened on April 26, 2010, when 48-year-old policeman Jenain Subi and three other police officers were on a patrol in a suburb of Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia.

According to official reports, 15-year-old Aminulrasyid Amzah and a friend allegedly tried to drive their car into the police officers. The friend managed to escape, but Aminulrasyid was killed as Jenain fired 21 shots at the fleeing vehicle.

Police officials initially claimed the two youth were thieves, but Aminulrasyid's family rejected those accusations and accused the officers involved of police brutality.

On Thursday, Judge Latifah Mohd Tahar sentenced Jenain to at least five years in jail for the fatal shooting of 15-year-old Aminulrasyid Amzah. He was found guilty of homicide, which carries a maximum 30-year-jail term and a fine.

The accused looked calm when the judge read out the sentence, while Aminulrasyid's mother was in tears as she heard the sentence being handed down. Thirty-nine prosecution witnesses and three defense witnesses testified at the trial.
