France spoil Gregan’s milestone with victory over Wallabies

06.11.05 11.30am

MARSEILLE - France wrecked George Gregan’s record-breaking 115th international by defeating Australia 26-16 in Marseille today.

The French ran in two tries through wing Cedric Heymans and flanker Remy Martin while halfback Jean-Baptiste Elissalde added two conversions and three penalties and first five-eighths Frederic Michalak a penalty.

Drew Mitchell scored a consolation try nine minutes into injury time and Matt Rogers landed three penalties and a conversion for Australia who have now gone six games without a win, their worst losing streak for more than 30 years.

Wallaby captain George Gregan, who won a record 115th cap against France, earlier this year equalled England prop Jason Leonard’s record of 114 caps, which included five for the British and Irish Lions.

Australia face England at Twickenham next Saturday before playing against Ireland and Wales.

France will host Canada next Saturday in Nantes before playing against Tonga in Toulouse and South Africa at the Stade de France on successive weekends.
