We are both 65, first trip consideration to visit Chiang Rai from Chiang Mai. We are seeking advice on the part of town to be located that serves our needs below. We expect to be there in late January 2012.

Our needs

(1) Guest house, with ensuite shower / toilet, AC, mini fridge, TV or wifi and King or 2 good twin beds. We pay THB 400 to THB 450 for a well kept Guest house in Chiang Mai. Is this what we can expect?

(2) 5 minute walk to local healthy choice Thai (non tourist) meals, fruit stalls and night markets., 711

(3) Access to a supermarket within 10 minutes walk as an alternative; one that has cooked foods, fruits, yogurt , bread etc.

We intend to take a first class bus from Chiang Mai. What transport is available from the bus station to our guest house for 2 riders with 1 medium size suitcase? and may be 1roll-aboard

Thanks

Dennis

I think the JedYod Road area would suit you, it's right in the heart of the city with everything you require within a short walk.

I'm reluctant to suggest a guest house but there are a number in the area that you could inspect and decide yourself.

You could walk from the "old bus station" within minutes or use the local songthaews.

Try the Tourist Inn beside Jet Yod Temple. Clean, good bakery, reasonably priced. Take a Songteaw from New bus terminal in Chiang Rai to Jet Yod Rd (Wat Jet Yod). Tourist Inn is at the southern wall of the temple. I am not sure if the Chiang Mai-Chiang Rai buses stop at the old bus terminal (which is located at downtown area) - unlike new bus terminal which is located south of the city.

I think there's a minibus service from the new bus station to the old with a set fare, toybits.

I'm not sure if the Chiang Mai bus goes on to the old bus station now but they could ask when they booked.

I like the Tourist Inn, I took friend there last year and the room looked clean and comfortable but I'm unsure the facilities would match their requirements.

Tourist Inn, Orchids, Baan Bua, Jansom....all within five mins walk of each other and all along Jed Yod road area....any one of them would likely satisfy most of the stated requirements or come very close....I think the regular fixed priced songtaew from the new bus station just goes to the old bus station..but easy to walk over to Jed Yod in about five minutes from there or i am sure for a few baht somebody will be happy to bring you right to Jed Yod. Maybe start out at Orchids, Baan Bua right next door. Tourist Inn and Jansom couple mins walk away nearer to the temple and easy to find.

I don't think Tourist Inn has tv in the room. Jansom does.

The Chiang Mai - Chiang Rai bus goes to both the new bus terminal & the old one downtown.
