Sunrise Tacos Coming To Jomtien!

Recommended Posts

Posted

I was down in Pattaya/Jomtien this past weekend and ate at Sunrise Tacos twice - for dinner on Saturday and lunch on Sunday. Both times the place was crowded and it was clear that they were in the process of ironing out little kinks, but the food was excellent and the service had the best intentions. I'm a regular at Sunrise's Emporium location so I'm very familiar with their menu.

As for labeling what type of Mexican food Sunrise Tacos is, I think it's virtually impossible to define. The beauty of eating at a restaurant like this is their huge salsa bar, so you can customize your dish to your liking. Rarely is any dish at a Mexican restaurant served exactly as you like it, so being able to add salsas to spice and juice up the dish is a great asset!

Oh, and the beer is cold and very reasonably priced!

A true fan of Mexican food, or part of the ST team ... lurked for almost 5 years before making a post about ST.

The Yanks and Ivans never had as good of a mole back in the Cold War days. Bring on Salt II the movie.

I can see your suspicions, but I do not work for ST! I joined this site years back to get on the TV mailing lists and never really cared to participate in the forums, but this thread caught my eye. Having lived in California for 7 years, I am a huge fan of Mexican food, in fact years back I toyed with the idea of starting my own Mexican restaurant - well before ST even came on the scene!

Do you like Mexican food?

Do you like Mexican food?

Seems like Mexican is the new Italian in Thailand these days...seems to be a new Mexican resto opening every other week these days. That other Bangkok paper recently ran a favorable review of a new one, Diablo, deep down on Sukhumvit soi 22.

I saw that in the Bangkok (Crap) Post too. I was immediately impressed by the fact that when you sit down a complimentary bowl of chips and salsa comes to your table. Hint, hint, hint :)

I much prefer Mexica to Italian food.

I will give this a try next week when I am in town. I have tried Mexican in Thailand twice and it was horrible so hopefully this time I will be pleasantly surprised.

As with others here I dont like the ++ on top of the bill. The fact is most places dont do it and it always leaves a bit of a sour taste in the mouth when you are slugged that extra amount on top of what you thought you were paying. It is far better to have the full price up front so it is all clear cut to customers.

As I said in and earlier post I am a complete novice when it come's to Mexican food. It might taste great (It will need too) your chicken in dark mole sauce that is, to me look's like one of the most unappetising plate's of food I have ever seen.

That's funny. Worse than Haggis? How about this one from Oaxaca? Uglier? I bet it tastes even better. Don't fret. We're VERY unlikely to see this dish in Thailand, at least cooked from scratch. It's quite a complex sauce to make.

Even in the US, a good mole is hard to find. But if done properly, it's fantastic. My favorite was a hole in the wall restaurant near the Salt Lake City airport. Awesome!

I tried a canned mole sauce one time...not very good.

You're absolutely right. In the US, it can be hard (but not impossible) to find a good one and I've tried the bottled stuff too and it's not good. On the other hand once you've tasted a good one, there is nothing like it. Anyway, those pics are just food porn, not gonna happen here.

food was good, for thailand. The salsa bar was outstanding, lots of choices

guacamole was good as in the states

Having tried the place i agree with this poster unfortunately the salsa bar was better than the food and the ++..... whatever anyone says leaves a bad taste in the mouth and nobody likes that, funny how most of the places that do 10% give you a mint to sweeten the blow.

Anyway good luck to you Gil i can see the effort you are putting in.wink.gif

Why not add another + for electric costs and another + for building rental and another + for.......

I've always hated ++, but it doesn't stop me from going somewhere I like!

Minus Minus with the plus plus noise. The owner gets it that it is very unpopular with customers. He has heard the claim that some won't go there because of it. The message is amply communicated. Do you really think 1000 more posts saying people don't like it is going to make it go away?

 Has anyone tried the mexican soup Menudo? My mexican friends in california every news years day would make a big pot of Menudo soup. Great for hangovers. Years ago a Campbell's soup had a version of Menudo called Pepper Pot. Tripe is not a problem in thailand, but Hominy might be. It is strange that the owner has not addressed the plus plus issue. Can anyone name one successful restaurant in pattaya/jomtien that has plus plus?:whistling:

I recall the owner did comment on the plus plus issue one time on this thread. Not going to search it but I believe it's there. Something about helping the staff to better wages and that the complexity of the operation justifies it.

Menudo? Yes I have SMELLED it many a time at Mexican restaurants on weekends. It would say forget about doing that in Thailand as it wouldn't sell and it would smell up the joint.

Which brings up something much more friendly -- POZOLE! Yummy. Also with hominy.

Ok, Ok, Ok....no more ++ discussions. It's been beaten to death. Please :jap:

But its fine to keep praising them like the second coming. This is a Discussion Forum and as much as you may find the ++ issue boring some of us find the unending adulation just as boring.

It sounds like you haven't really read the thread. There has been a good balance of comments on the food, service, opening problems, etc. Hardly only adulation, in fact, not very much pure adulation.

I have to agree on this one, there has been quite a bit of opinion, both pro and con, on the food and service at Sunrise in this thread. In fact, I'm a little surprised this thread wasn't closed on a couple of occasions when the discussion got a little heated. In any case, people, if they are of a mind, will at some point have to try the place themselves and make up their own minds. If the place is still here in 3 years, we will all know what the collective judgment is :)

For a little change of pace between the biased attempts to squelch both ++ and adulation comments-- attached is pic of three tacos on the Tuesday & Friday all-you-can-eat feed.

They look a little sickly to me...they need to beef (or pork) up a bit.

Ah, pozole. Even the humblest establishment in Mexico has got it. Brings back some fine memories of Oaxaca.

Agreed. I'm impressed. Look great! I attached a pic of fish tacos from a restaurant in the US. Looks pretty much the same.

As for reviews, I found this one for Baja Fresh Mexican Grill. One of my favorite "fast food" mexican restaurants in the US. As you can see from the article, the reviewer doesn't agree with me. The restaurant biz is a tough job.

I actually did think that 1000 more posts might make it go away, but realistically I suppose you are correct....

The thing that totally astonishes me is that they are apparently making the tacos with soft flour tortillas. If so, I will not be eating them.

Well the fish tacos for example are on the menu as flour and that would be very common for Baja fish tacos anywhere. The Al Pastor ones specified flour as well which to me is weird as that isn't so common, but it is clear on the menu.

Still hoping the owner can answer the question about the item on the Taco buffet menu labeled SOFT TACOS with some choices of meat. (The choices there are grilled chicken, ground beef, carnitas, or veg..) On that set, type of tortilla is NOT specified. So, once again, are we going to be able to have a choice of corn for that taco set on the buffet, or not? Seems a clear enough question. If not, let us know please. I agree many people including me STRONGLY prefer corn tortillas for tacos, and if that isn't possible at all on the buffet for ANY of the choices, well, then not interested personally.

Yes, you have a choice of 3 types - soft flour, soft corn, or crispy corn. We are trying to answer all questions promptly, apologies if I missed this one.

Soft flour are best served with the baja fish tacos, but actually, I like ordering the baja fish with crispy ones!

Best,

Well, we have a super long lease so I am hoping we are here to stay!

We now have our delivery service on line. If you want to order delivery, please ring 038-303-067. We have 3 delivery zones, and we are following the http://door2doorpattaya.com/delivery-map.html delivery charges per zone (zone 1 is Baht 50, Zone 2 is 70 baht, and Zone 3 is 90 baht. If you check the map for your address, you can see what the delivery charge is for your location. We will be building a software driven program also to capture your ordering information and special directions to your home, so that you don't have to explain it every time you order. In the next several days, simply ring us, give us your mobile number, and we will pull up your information. VIPs who order frequently are bound to fine some special items in their delivery on the house.

I am offering 15% of the bill for all Thai Visa customers who order from us this evening and tomorrow only. This is a small gesture I know, but I am hoping it helps smooth the bumps we will run into on our first day doing home deliveries. Our delivery guy is good though, he is ex "win motorcye" if you know what that means in Thai. :)

We don't have the pies yet for delivery, but we will shortly. Our first batch of key lime (my favorite) is being made tonight for testing.

Best,

Gil

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the restaurant in Zone 2 so if you had it delivered two blocks away you'd be paying 70 baht but deep into Pattaya 50 baht? If so, that's kinda whack. :ermm::ph34r::ermm:
