Northern train services back on track

The Nation on Sunday

Train services to the North from Bangkok resumed yesterday, while Southern train services remain suspended due to flooding of the railway tracks.

State Railway of Thailand (SRT) public relations division chief Nuanla-ong Wongchan said yesterday that the first Bangkok-Chiang Mai express train departed Hua Lumpong Station at 8.30am, while the Chiang Mai-Bangkok express train departed the northern city at 8.45am. Both trains would re-route via the east to avoid flooded areas. The northern trains had been suspended for a month after floods covered the tracks in Lampang, Phitsanulok, Nakhon Sawan, Lop Buri, and Ayutthaya. To avoid the flooded Don Muang-Ayutthaya section, SRT has re-routed them to the east - Makkasan-Hua Mark, Chachoengsao, Khlong 19, Kaeng Khoy, Ban Phachi and back to the rest of the northern route - which would lengthen the journey by another 1-2 hours.

The SRT suspended the Southern train services and refunded money to those who had already bought tickets, after the Bang Sue-Bang Bumru railway tracks were submerged under 50cm-deep flood waters and the Nong Pla Duk-Suphan Buri station was under 30cm-deep waters. For information, call hotline 1690 around the clock.

Southerners making 200 bamboo rafts for victims

The Nation on Sunday

The Southern Border Provinces Administration Centre, local offices and local residents have joined forces to produce 200 bamboo rafts to aid flood victims in Central Thailand.

Residents of Pattani, Narathiwat and Yala brought bamboo rafts to the centre yesterday to make the 1.2m x 2m rafts, along with 10,000 bottles of drinking water and some instant food products.

The Energy Ministry yesterday reported that the flood disaster in Bangkok and vicinity provinces has forced the closure of 279 gas stations.

Ministry spokesman Pachara Naripthapan said 39 stations were closed in Bangkok, 57 in Nonthaburi, 84 in Pathum Thani, 66 in Ayutthaya, 13 in Nakhon Sawan, six in Chai Nat, three in Lop Buri, four in Ang Thong, and one each in Phichit, Samut Prakan, Sing Buri, Saraburi, Uthai Thani, Suphan Buri and Nakhon Pathom. He said oil reserves were still sufficient hence there was no need to stockpile petrol. Curbs on water in Thon Buri, Nonthaburi, Samut Prakan

30168838-01.jpg

Residents of parts of Nonthaburi, Samut Prakan and Bangkok's Thon Buri areas have been told to stock water as the Metropolitan Waterworks Authority would supply water only from 6am-9am and 5pm-8pm daily, the Flood Relief Operations Centre spokesman said yesterday.

"The areas to which the MEA would reduce water supplies include the western Nonthaburi districts of Muang, Pak Kret, Bang Bua Thong, Bang Yai and Bang Kruay districts. The other areas are Samut Prakan's Phra Pradaeng and Bangkok's Khlong San, Bangkok Noi, Rat Burana, Bang Khun Thian and Taling Chan," the FROC'S Tongthong Chandransu said.

The water was contaminated by the large amount of weeds gushing from Maha Sawat Canal to the MEA plant in Thon Buri. To ensure water quality, the MEA has to reduce its production from 900,000 cubic metres to 500,000 cubic metres daily, he said.

At other times of the day, the MEA has to spare water for prominent agencies such as hospitals, he said.

Nonthaburi victims hit by spike in rents

The Nation on Sunday

Apartment rents in Nonthaburi have spiralled up to five times more than the normal rates, inflicting another blow on flood-hit people, a source at the Commerce Ministry said yesterday.

People and ministerial officials who were forced to leave their homes due to the floods have filed complaints with the ministry after apartment rents and tariffs at small hotels went up drastically. A condominium on Rattanathibes Road, which usually charged Bt3,500-Bt4,000 per month now charged as much as Bt7,000 (excluding a Bt2,000 deposit and water/power bills), while some apartments on Sanambin Nam Road that used to charge Bt2,000-Bt2,500 per month now charged Bt3,000-Bt3,500.

From October 1-26, 1,208 complaints were made through hotline 1569 of the Department of Internal Trade, a source reported. Most complaints were about the high prices of food and beverage (pork, eggs, and cooked food), construction materials (sand, concrete bricks, and cement) and personal-use items (life vests and plastic boots).
