I don't know if you have seen this, but it's from the American Citizen Services web page, maybe a place to start until the experts come along.

http://bangkok.usembassy.gov/service/birth-of-a-u.s.-citizen-in-thailand.html

I just got my passport for my newborn child. I am married so that is the only difference I can tell you about.

Go print out the forms for `1) Reporting a birth abroad and 2) passport application for your new child.

Make an appointment with the American citizen services group on the web. Sorry, you can't just walk in and get served.

Make sure you have all the originals of each document asked of you in the documents.

1) proof of your citizenship - passports, birth certificates

2) proof of living at least 5 years in the States for you - SSN summary or college diploma and rigistrar's report.

3) If you are not married, they may suggest you get DNA tests done - be prepared to be asked if you are sure its yours. You may want to have a history of your whole time with your kid's mom on paper . She may be asked questions. They asked me where I met my wife.

4) Make sure you get at least 2 passport photos of the baby with a white background and the specified dimensions.

5) Need the Thailand birth certificate with proper translation

6) Fill in the forms with either blue or black ink and make sure its consistent and unsigned/signed properly

I had to go twice because we didn't have original form of identification of wife. We just grabbed the wrong passports and assumed it was hers.

Make sure you have the money for the fees .

Have instructions on picking up or delivery of passport.

Hi...I had to do this with my daughter and agree with "Head Snake" with all the documents you will need...At the time I did it, I wasn't married to the mother, although we are now...Our daughter was born in Khon Kaen and at Sri Nakarin hospital, they have a Gov't approved DNA testing center...Just to cover myself, I had a DNA test done with me and my daughtert incase the embassy asked for it, I would have it....sure enough, after grilling us, and really grilling my wife on our relationship history, and going over the paper work with a fine tooth comb for 30 minutes....they said we needed to get a DNA test and were prepared to give us all the instructions on how to order the special kit etc etc...At that point I handed over the test paper I had done in Khon Kaen...at first they were a bit taken back by my preparedness....then he took it in the back to have other officers review and they agreed it was all legit.....Approval was then given....So my suggestion would be to call the embassy and ask them where in Thailand they would recommend getting a test done that meets their approval ...this way there is no doubt in their minds and things should move along better for you...If I remember, it cost me 8000 baht to have it done..and also I think I remember it took about 3 weeks to get the results in on the official documents...but it was worth it over the possibility of dealing with 2 more months of delays and hassels
