Chinese new year temple fair. Every year at this time.

If you like plants, you can buy stuff that you can't find anywhere else on the island.

The Chalong area is predominantly Chinese in character, so, most of the locals will not be sympathetic to noise complaints. Anyway, it's only once a year.

Most of the plants are now at my place, the missus has been there every day buying everything she sees.

She's just heading out the door again now to pick up a few more.sad.png

My missus told me that she "has bought a lot of plants" there a couple of days ago.

She refuses to tell me how much she spent, so, I'm taking that as a sign that our plant watering regimen has been expanded by quite a bit.

As long as there are a bunch of Bromeliads in there somewhere, I won't be too hard on her when I get home.

She took the car this time( I have mixed feelings about her having learnt to drive!), but it wasn't big enough for all the plants she bought. She was followed home by a bloody delivery truck with the rest!

There was a couple of Bromeliads - expensive!

Anyway, it's only once a year.

Are you kidding.......these festivals seem to increase by the numbers every year, shifting between Wat Chalong, Wat Tai and that new vacant place across from Wat Tai (all the same area more or less). Loud concerts with those annoying bass sounds "thump thump thump" till 3 in the morning. Friends living on the hillside between Hayeak Chalong and 3-4 km north "enjoy" even louder noise most of the night, reflecting up the mountain.... Let's hear it, if you don't like it, move back to your home country...... Take it to an isolated beach somewhere....not a densely populated area with kids that need to sleep (and parents)....

Posted

I live less than a kilometre from Wat Chalong and I only hear this once a year.

You may complain about other noise quite legitimately, but, there is absolutely nothing you can do about a yearly temple fair, especially at one of the most important and famous Wats in Southern Thailand. It really is part of the culture. Might as well grin and bear it.

If someone really wants that view so badly that they will buy a house on a hill-side, with all the disadvantages of access to shops, possible water problems, crappy, muddy roads, potential land-slides etc. Then I figure that they should be able to take the increased noise levels, too.

TIT..This fair has been going on for many years, lts big thing here in Chalong, the locals look forward to it,me too...if you dont like it and you cant stand the noise i sugest you do one or two things

1. BUY SOME EARPHONES

`2. F..CK OFF ON HOLIDAY FOR A WEEK..and while your there,remember your a guest here.its their Country..

yeez, its an annual market/fair to celebrate lunar new year, and its been so for decades. I used to live in Land&House Park probably one km away, and had no problem sleeping at night

We where there last night. Vendors from all over the country makes an interesting mix to be seen only a few times a year in Phuket.

Thais love it, get used to it

Or live in a quiet place like an Isarn ricefield

Posted

Invest in double-glazing?

yeah, to make my bedroom quiet, I would go double glazing or noise reducing glass, sandwich walls, and fiberglass insulation in ceiling, gasket for door

works wonders in Sukhumvit, should work in Chalong. Not really needed in most Isarn ricefieldscowboy.gif

Like I said, it's not only Wat Chalong, once a year, (which would be fine). We also have that empty (I wish) piece of land opposite Wat Tai. The owner of that land is probably making a handsome profit from renting it out to travelling road shows/markets. Now it's been going again for a few days, and it feels (can't remember) that it's the third time, only this year mad.gif Loud concerts, thump thump thump till late at night. Surley I can't be the only one pissed off by this. Is any TV member living in the Sun Palm Village area or Soi 27-37 or are we only having market/festival huggers in this area ?

Fairs at temples, like the one at Wat Chalong, this one, the one at Nai Harn temple, Rawai temple, etc., are part of the Thai tradition and very, very important to the locals.

Accept them or move away from a temple area.

Sigh....(the "move away" reply).....This fair, I'm pretty sure, has nothing to do with any temple. The owner has (with big signs) tried to sell this piece of land for well over a year now. This is how he is making his money right now.... I do hope that he finds a buyer very soon, or there will be a new "fair" within a few weeks.

Enjoying the fun of the fair & then going home to sleep in a quiet location are entirely different than being forced to sleep with earplugs. There used to be daytime businesses on that land & one reason why the poster moved into Sun Palm or nearby could well have been because it was quiet. Despite the notion that temple fairs & the like are part of Thai culture, technology has helped push the noise factor to extremes. Even that most beautiful & serene festival of Loy Krathong is becoming noisy & boisterous. I am sure Songkran was also once a gentle & peaceful occasion. OK times change but there is a culture growing in Thailand of he who makes the most noise will get all the attention.

Wrong, this is a yearly fair from the temple, always held at the same location just outside the temple.

If he moved there because of the quietness: there are yearly events in the area, he could/should have known about them before moving. These fairs have been around for a long, long time, are noisy and have always been noisy.

and in general, it is much more quiet here in the middle of Kata valley, despite all the hotels and tourists. Chalong has always been noisy parts of the year due to cheap land used for fairs

Mr Napalm I live 100 yds from Wat Chalong it is not a problem to me, my gf or her 10 year old daughter, I accept everything that goes on here because it 100% better from where I came from, love the party's and hope there are many more!!

The only thing I would complain about is the amount of rubbish that is left everywhere but again not worth getting to upset about.

Years ago, somebody who has lived here far longer than me, told me that Thais are incredibly tolerant but extremely inconsiderate.

I have found this to be true. Its just something we have to get used to and accept as we are guests in their country.

Mind you, I too have found the bloody fireworks are getting louder! I never had much of a problem with fireworks (living in a fairly remote place), but the other night a 'banger' went off that even made me jump! One of my dogs went missing for a couple of hours, she was clearly so terrified she just ran.....

My tolerance evaporates when it comes to 'bangers'.

So you don't care that dogs may be so terrified they run far enough to lose their homes (this happened to someone I know)?

Not to mention the terror caused to the local wildlife?

Sorry - as I said before, I've absolutely zero tolerance for incredibly loud 'bangs'. I'm used to the normal firecrackers (as are most of my dogs), but they presumably are producing ever louder fireworks. Why?? Who other than a few morons think 'the louder the better'?

You chose to have a dog in Thailand.

Not to mention the terror caused to the local wildlife?

I sympathise, but, no noisier than a crack of thunder.

If you like fire-works the bigger the bang, the better it is. No logic to it, but, nonetheless true.

The Moron.
