Alcohol has good benefits when sick it breaks down bacteria and viruses in the stomach and blood stream and can aid in minimizing the length and severity of illness..

I've never heard anything along the lines of what you say above being offered as legitimate medical advice. And to the contrary, most of the time, when people are sick, doctors advise to avoid alcohol, and particularly in conjunction with the taking of other medicines... That, and alcohol at some levels is supposed to worsen sinus problems...because of its dehydrading effects.

As you said, at recommended dosages, the alcohol amounts in those preparations are probably minimal and of no great effect... But as I said, it's just another ingredient that I don't really want... added into the one ingredient -- guaifenesin or pseudoephedrine -- that I do want. I can do without the unnecessary extras.

Yes they do recommend you avoid alcohol but it is because of the potential for adverse reactions to other meds and the amount being used that are NOT designed to coexist which in the cases being discussed is obviously NOT the circumstances..

And yes there is wide ranging medical evidence that alcohol does do exactly what I mentioned and it goes back centuries not just decades..

Why do you think all forms of alcohol are used to antisept? The effects internally are much the same.. But you do whatever you want that still doesn't invalidate the info provided just your choice to do what you want with it..

So getting plastered drunk is a good way to cure the common cold...or a sinus infection... or the common food poisoning episode? Is that really your idea for the internal antiseptic properties of alcohol???

so can someone please tell me if any over the counter medication still contain some amount of psuedoephedrine? or if not any recommendation of an altenative medicine? can i get an actifed perscription from a clinic or does it have to be a hospital?

Only hospitals are allowed to have it. (rather like having the fox guard the henhouse, but so it has been decreed)

It is possible that some of the decongestant nasal sprays are still available, worth checking especially as their active ingrediant is a different drug.

Try oxymetazoline (brand names Iliadin, Metzodin, Oxymet, Pernazene) or xylometazoline (brand name Otrivin)

Should only be taken for a few days, but may help you through the worst of the congestion.

And you can still get antihistamine tablets, which my helo especially at night. But no effective decongestant tablet available oTC.

No help short term I know, but I have really benefited from simple nasal rinsing. I'd say a 90% improvement generally, and 50% better for cold. You can keep the drugs, they have a nast rebound effect too.

i flew with a mild cold and now almost 24 hours later i still have hearing loss in one ear. i have only taken tiffy which has phenylaphrine and it has not helped at all.

Try yawning many times very wide, helps equalize the pressure in the ear.

If this does not work and the hearing loss persists better see an ENT.

Saw an ENT. She said I have bleeding in middle ear and ear infection but the ear drum looked okay. She gave me amoxicilian and pseudoephedrine. She forgot to give me paracetomal and I had run out and was too tired to venture outside for more so I did not have a very good sleep last night, as the antibiotics were fighting with my body. It might have also been because I had barely eaten the night before. After 24 hour on antibiotic I do not feel much difference except that the ear is less sensitive painwise to physical touch.

Hope you get through it fast.
