Red light confusion ends in Phuket pickup sideswipe

PHUKET: A two-vehicle collision in Thalang last night was likely the result of one pickup braking for a red light, only to be slammed from behind by a second pickup whose driver expected him to run through it, Phuket Police said.

Each of the vehicles had two passengers, none of whom were injured in the crash.

Thalang Police were notified of the accident of Thepkrasattri Road northbound at 12:30am.

At the scene they found a black Mazda pickup crashed into a white Ford Ranger at the junction in front of the Tesco Thalang shopping mall.

Capt Somkhit Khawsan said it appeared that the Mazda braked for a red light, only to be rammed from behind by the Ranger.

The Phuket-registered Ranger, a sports model, suffered the worst of the damage to the heavier Mazda.

The Surat Thani-registered Mazda belonged to the Sor Seri-alai Company, a coconut collection and transport firm that uses monkeys to fetch its products from treetops. No simians or coconuts were aboard at the time of the accident.

Both drivers were escorted to Thalang Police Station and charged with reckless driving, as is customary in Thailand.

Thai Police typically charge both parties involved in road accidents, then drop charges against the innocent party as determined by subsequent investigation.

The Phuket Gazette reminds drivers to always check the rear-view mirror when preparing to brake quickly for a red light.

I agree. You shouldn't have to worry about being rammed when stopping for a red light ! The same goes for pedestrian crossings ;-) or killing zones as we call them!

Totally irresponsible of the Mazda driver to brake at the red light. Good thing they charged him with reckless driving.

Of course you have to worry about that. I was already taught that for my DL back home, a long time ago now.

I wonder if the Ford Ranger had ABS, EBD, new tires and a driver properly trained to use these devices at speed!

Perhaps this crash test between the Mazda and Ford was organised by certain Thaivisa members to ascertain the best vehicle to purchase!

I think that is exactly what they are saying and it's true. You have to do it sometimes, especially if there's a tailgating minibus behind you!

Slow news week, I think. Yesterday the PG sent out a story about someone who was robbed of 5,000 baht and a mobile phone! I am glad to see that the mods did not deem this news story worthy of inclusion on the TV Phuket news forum.

in this case, the Ranger is some 300-350Kg more heavy than the Mazda, PG you need to learn about cars to avoid stating the oppsosite

and Phuket gazette, do you really advice drivers to not stop at red lights cause there is a vehcile behind them? Shame on you

sure, reinforced with a bull bar at 7Kg, ad a coconut cage at 30 Kg, and you get my numbers above. this mazda is stock approx 1600kg, this ranger is approx 1950kg

any more legal mods to the mazda, it would have large plates, this one is tabien lech

both are less than 5 yo, so none has as old tyres as PC. The ranger would have had shorter braking distance due to better brakes and tyres, but again brakes need to be applyed to work at all
