Open/Unlocked [To Network] Dongles Available Here In Los?

Featured Replies

Just wondering if there are any unlocked/open sim usb data card dongles that can access more than one network here in LOS [and other countries] with prepaid sim cards?? I currently have a huewai dongle locked to a network in the Philippines and rather than buy a local Thai locked network dongle, I would like just one dongle that can be used for all major networks, rather than carry several dedicated dongles.

a few questions.....

Are all dongles created equil or are some more sensitive and have stronger signal/faster speeds??

Are they available here?? and any suggestions for makes and models??

Also if changing network and sim......is there any complicated reconfiguration invloved??

I did a google and found the following link that confirms that unlocked dongles exist out there, but what about LOS?? http://www.themobileindian.com/news/4861_Top-5-3G-data-card-dongles_full

What is the make and model of your current modem?

My current modem/dongle is a 'Huawei mobile broadband E153' and is locked to the Philippine network 'Smart'. I have gone on google and there is a way to unlock it, but the procedure is way over my head and I would be reluctant to try it on my own for fear of crashing it and here in LOS, I would like one that is compatable with the major 3g networks.....AIS, DTAC, and TRUE.

I would rather invest in an unlocked dongle than having to buy 3 separate locked dongles for the best coverage in LOS.

Ive tried a selection of unlocked USB modems / dongle / air cards , purchased here in Thailand both ones dedicated to one network and one's that cover all the current 3G frequencies for Thailand . My own personal view is buy an unlocked USB modem that covers all the current Thailand frequencies and has an external antenna socket , some people say , I don't need an external antenna connection as I live in a very good signal area, then their circumstances change and may be they move to a poor signal reception area , you never know what the future holds.

Ive purchased two USB modems that have the above specifications

1. Vodafone K4505

2. ZTE MF668A

The vodafone K4505 is known to some times have a problem with the external antenna connection.

The ZTE MF668A I find the best over all USB modem ive used to date.

I have used both the above USB modems on , AIS / TrueMove H / Cat ''my'' 3G plans .

Reading some 3G forums the Huawei / Vodafone K4605 USB ( 42.2Mbps ) modem seems to have the reputation as being the current best over all model on the market ( and the most expensive ) but ive not been able to find one on sale in Thailand .

May be have a look here thumbsup.gif

I am using an unlocked Huawei E153 bought here in Bangkok with a true SIM. It gives very good internet speeds (very non-tecchie, I know) in Bangkok but is very slow up in the North East boonies and, for example, is very patchy with Skype video up there. I imagine you would be able to get yours unlocked at Printip Plaza to get you started.

I will be looking for a more suitable replacement later in the year but for now it's good enough for my needs.

Have you actually tested the "locked" modem with a different carrier sim? You may have to create a new profile with different APN settings to connect., but you may find out it is not locked at all.

Supports HSDPA/UMTS 2100MHz.

Supports EDGE/GPRS/GSM 850/900/1800/1900MHz

So not worth the trouble of unlocking as it only covers TOT 3G and EDGE speeds on the rest. If it did, I would arrange unlocking and the change of Dashboard.
