So i've flown Air Asia before but on comparison Malaysia airlines is $40 more for the flight i'm considering. Do you think Malaysia airlines (economy) is better than Air Asia by much, comfort wise?

No comparison at all. Malaysian Airlines is much more comfortable and of course you receive your luggage allowance, food and drinks inclusive.

We use either Malaysian or Singapore a fair bit and, the latter has the edge but I have no hesitation using Malaysian at all... great staff.

Air Asia is a budget line, so they can use that as an excuse in whichever situation that occurs.

Given the choice,Yes to Malaysian ,all inclusive & willing ti help with interline
