Coffee Connoisseurs - What Are You Drinking And Where?

What is your favorite coffee spot and what makes your morning taste brighter?

Starbuck is all right and I usually go for a cappuccino with a sprinkle of cinnamon on top, but there must be better and more exotic coffee bar in Bangkok.

Here are a few of mine:

- Amarin Plaza 1st floor Grand Hyatt Bistro bar. Good coffee, nice view, lots of news papers and the actual setting in one of Christopher G. Moore's books.

- JW Marriott bakery at Sukhumvit Soi 2.

Good thing about Starbuck is that they are consistent, other places if good you go back you find out they cut back on quality to make more money

Dean and Deluca, consistently good. two locations in BKK. my favorite is on Naritiwas Rd. in the Sathorn area (Chong Nonsi BTS)

1. At home perculating some freshly ground roasted beans from Khao Thalu with breakfast.

2. The lady who sells original coffee near where I have lunch at the new market in Chumphon.

At home, I can wait a maximum of 40 minutes (usually 20) before the first cup of brew.

French Press - Swiss maker

I am currently drinking Coffee Bean Espresso @ B110/200gms. I miss Mokkona Green Box Espresso @ B87.5/250gms. Can't say it was the highest quality, but best value I have found in Thailand and perhaps even USA.

Even carry a heating coil while traveling, I am like that maniac guy in Blackhawk down. I MUST have coffee in the AM and I will do anything to brew it in my room - including using our butane cook stove.

In US I used to buy Starbucks French Roast on sale, but would never visit the store to buy a bag at full retail or a B200 cup of creamy coffee dessert - what a waste of money.

Marshall's in the US often has whole bean coffee (Starbucks) on heavy discount, but it usually is not French and obviously requires a grinder. Another place to score is Costco which has Starbucks roasted beans - relatively inexpensively.

I make my own with Saeco Royale automatic. Water from my own deep well on Phuket, coffee beans from BonCafe. I prefer their Dubai Roast, which Thai arabica with a medium roast much like a Vienna roast. Cinnamon on coffee definitely not to my taste, it's just too much coverup. A slight sprinkling of dark chocolate powder is OK for occasional change.

I have one of those small top-of-the-cup coffee makers that one sees in Vietnam: basically a metal cup with a brim that sits atop the cup. The base is perforated...and has a vertical threaded stem. One screws a perforated disc down onto the ground coffee which compresses it then pour in the hot water. Perfect for making coffee in your room.

I have friends with B40,000 Seacos who admit the coffee from my little device is better.

BTW, VPP COFFEE, a lower priced brand sold in most markets is surprisingly good, especially the Espresso roast; usually about B150/250gr.

So sad.........................average coffee in BKK but had a fair one at local up a quite soi in lad pharo, who ever claimed Starbucks must be North American, its the worst coffee you can pay for anywhere...i agree there consistent and disgusting, but its what your brought up on , back home in AU any cafe or restaurant serve 10 times better coffee, the fact Starbucks is not more than a one or two stores down town in Melbourne shows how popular it is

One of the few things i miss about the states is dinners with unlimited coffee with your breakfast. Pot o joe yes please.

Theres a cafe on the 2nd floor of major ekkami right off the bts that makes good coffee, fairly cheap maybe 60b per americano.

Don't be too hard on Starbucks. The French Roast and Espresso are good if you get them on sale. I would agree the rest of the roasts are total -blah!

Yeah those little viet coffee makers can be great but this is the real tip...

I carry one with a coil and a plastic cup. This is only similar to the one I have (very), the one I have has a lip and can straddle the cup. Also has a cover. This appears to be a replacement filter.

Back to the OP, I never go out for coffee.

I don't get all the attacks that I see aimed at Starbucks. At home I drink freshly ground Kenyan AA from a French press, but if I'm outside with family or friends we'll stop by a Starbucks and I'll enjoy that just as equally.

They serve a pretty good cuppa and provide a pretty relaxing and comfortable atmosphere to enjoy it in.

Here in Thailand their business is booming, and I doubt that would be the case if the coffee they made wasn't up to snuff. In Australia it was a different matter, they went into an already entrenched cafe culture.

The same thing is happening in France now, but they've learned from their mistakes and are now trying to adapt their stores and their coffees to the local drinking trends and culture.

The little coffee shop just inside the front entry at Big C in chumphon makes a nice brew for 35 baht, I stop there occasionally when the misses is getting her beauty trearment in Tesco.

Freshly ground peaberry beans brewed on a La Pavoni lever machine... Mmmm! No need to go anywhere for good coffee! For my afternoon cup, my only choice is Dean and Deluca at the office, but it is also okay.

my everyday cup, Dean and Delucar, Park Venture (Plern Chit BTS)

small hot Americano 75, medium 100. they have a point collecting for another free cup too!

Some years back, I was partnered in a small diner in BKK with another American, We had unlimited fresh brewed coffee. All the Brit and European customers complained and demanded we serve up that instant Nescafe crap!! Can you believe that??? LOL

Great location, will try that when I get back. In the same area, I have also been recommended the coffee bar at The Oriental Residences just down Wireless road.

I used to use Dean & Deluca but eventually decided that their prices and attitude were a bit too hi-so for a humble fellow like me. Last I checked they were using beans from Coffee Works, if you want a similar taste at home.

My favorites among locally available beans are Segafredo Extra Strong, Boncafe Cafe Crema and Cafe Angelo, and the occasional Starbucks (their Christmas blend is always good but unfortunately only available around, uh, Christmas). Now if we could only get Illy espresso beans a bit fresher, there'd be no need to look further . . . .

Thailand has some of the best coffee in the world, so IMO it's crazy to recommend Starbucks with their overly milky poor coffee (as also just stated by Mary Portas). Small cups of coffee offer the best taste and Thai Arabica is great...Aroma brand is my favourite. Loads of great coffee from street stalls/BTS stalls for a quick fix, but Doi Tung is hard to beat. Really hard to beat. M Cafe is Phra Kanong (under the BTS station) do a brilliant one but it's strong.

I prefer TRUE Coffee shop, they have some very good favors of coffee and also they have different kinds of coffee beans to taste and try. At Siam Paragon, true towers - ratchada, fortune it mall, some of the locations.

At my work place, basically I sip espresso, but if you are lucky maybe you can drink coffee for free when I test coffee machinescoffee1.gif

Would recommend for Segafredo in Central World and in Central Chidlom.

Admitted not easy to find good coffee by western standard.

I, myself drink almost everydays for 15 baht Thai-style coffee,

my favorite coffee street-vendor is at nearby Bangkok bank, Chan Road (BKK)

Joe6pack - You cannot get the coild in Thailand anymore. I am lucky as I found a great coil and it has lasted a long time (good quality). Coils no longer available in Malaysia either (at least Penang) for years.

Talat Sao in Vientiane has some cheap ones (check them b4 you buy). I forget what I paid but I stocked up. A better option is India (yeah, Indian mfg SUCKS but its better than Lao. I would not be surprised if the coils came from VNM.
