Last Year Anders Breivik Killed 77 People –Now It’S Room Service, His Own Suite And Japanese Meditation

The intentional homicide rate in 2012 was (per 100,000 of population):

USA 4.2

UK 1.2

Norway 0.6

Which would you suggest has the most "successful" criminal justice system?

Totally depends upon your school of thought. Given that Norway has likely a higher general standard of living and less of a gap between rich and poor citizens.

Many other variables I'm sure....

It has nothing to do with the criminal justice system. Successful prosecutions might tell you something, but then you would have to be sure that the accused were rightly convicted.

Percentage of convicted prisoners re-offending after release as well as money spent on the criminal justice system in relation to GDP would be some fair variables to compare.

Statistics are fixed points in time. There is plenty of evidence that the extremely liberal Scandinavian social model, which worked so well with a small affluent culturally homogeneous model is starting to unravel due to the rapid demographic changes there.

They are a bit lengthy and obviously a political hot potato, but if you don't reject them out of hand it is difficult to imagine that either crime rates of recidivism rates will be anything like so benign in a decade from now.

Aside from the above article

I can't find any definitive figures but word on the net seems to be a recidivism rate of about 20% for Norway versus 50-60% for the UK and the USA.

Homicide is surely a crime where recidivism is comparatively rare, apart from serial killers and gang "contract" killing. I knew a murderer, who is in prison now as far as I know, and I doubt very much whether he would kill again. (I think I know another, who might, but that's another story!) The first is in England, the second in Thailand. Anyway, Breivik is a nut in most senses of the word... and normal 'rules' do not apply.

Gates of Vienna was one of Breivik's favourite blogs.

Brievik was probably inspired by the tagline on the delightful Gates of Vienna blog:

"At the siege of Vienna in 1683 Islam seemed poised to overrun Christian Europe.

We are now in a new phase of a very old war".

It reminds me of the WW2 poster and it's memorable line:

"Loose lips sink ships".

PS In a June 2012 paper for the International Centre for Counter Terrorism, Arun Kundnani writes that since 1990 jihadists have murdered 263 people in Europe with the Madrid train bombing (191 dead) and London transport attacks (53 dead) being the major incidents.

During the same time period right wing extremists have murdered 249 people with Brievik being the most murderous incident.

Mercifully neither group of extremists come close to the murderous efficiency of Irish nationalists (IRA/PIRA/INLA etc) and "loyalist" terrorists with 3,524 dead over 30 years. Sadly the killings in Northern Ireland continue today and we are, in this situation justifiably, in a "new phase of a very long war".

Which goes to prove how you can bastardize statistics to give a completely misleading picture if you try hard enough, incidentally since you care to mention Northern Ireland did you know that on 9/11 Islamists murdered more people in two hours than were killed in Northern Ireland from 1969 to 1995 (RUC figures).

But I digress, Breivik cited influences as diverse as past U.S presidents and Al Qaeda, so to pick on a blog he read is deliberate cherry picking. Furthermore just because Hitler liked Wagner's music does not detract from it's merit, just as even conceding Breivik's approval of Gates of Vienna does not of itself disqualify all it's content of merit.

So back to the OP, Norwegian crime and recidivism. Is it a realistic assumption that these figures will continue to compare favorably with the U.S if large numbers of immigrants continue to arrive from cultures who wish to remain apart from Norwegian culture. blink.png

Edit: And the icing on the cake as the link above shows is the chronic under-funding of the Norwegian police force.

Not really, in this case.

It is pertinent because the main purpose of Gates of Vienna is to propagate against what they label as the Islamization of Europe, the same being the primary reason stated by Breivik for his terrorist acts.

Of course, quoting this blog does not mean you support what Breivik did. It does, however, suggest that you must think it is a reliable source.

Personally I would give it about the same amount of credibility and time as I would a yellow shirt blog doing a historic dissertation on Khmer temples, or perhaps a Nazi blog analyzing Jewish influence in American politics.

Sure, there may be an objective fact or two buried in there, but the obvious bias and attempt to bend reality to a pet theory or ideology makes it very tedious for a reader attempting to find out the actual state of things.
