Just a quick check to confirm what I seem to hear or get it blown away. Since Laos is a quicker trip than Malaysia, train wise, just curious if it is a coin toss or okay if you have the letter and company registration with you.

I have not read anything good about Vientiane but have no real knowledge.  My take is that authorities want non-immigrants visa holders to use Penang as a first choice as this facility is set up for it as it's primary function.  But that, again, is just my feeling.

The Vientiane consulate can be a disaster, but with proper paperwork you will get a Single entry NON-B, no double or multiple entries.

Thanks for in the input. Looks like Penang is the place then. Do you know how close the train gets you to Malaysia? I'm guessing it is a bus/van ride from there to Penang. Eh, maybe I should just make a 'best way to Penang' post.
