Australian stabbed in heart in Thai bag-snatch tragedy

PHUKET: -- An Australian woman has been stabbed to death in a suspected bag-snatch gone wrong on the popular holiday island of Phuket in Thailand.

The woman was walking with a friend near their hotel complex in Kata Noi Bay, on Phuket's west coast, about 10.30pm last night when they were attacked by two men who approached them on a motorbike.

The men attempted to steal the handbags of the women and lashed out with a knife when they couldn't grab them.

Ms Yone, a supervisor at the five-star Katathani Phuket Beach Resort where the women were staying, said this morning that one of the women was stabbed in the heart and died soon after.

The other woman suffered a slash wound to her arm and was taken to hospital in Phuket.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said Thai police had launched an investigation into the woman’s death.

‘‘We are aware of the death of an Australian woman in Thailand and are providing consular assistance to her family and to the other woman involved in the incident,’’ she said.

‘‘It would not be appropriate to discuss the case further while a police investigation is in progress.’’

It is believed the woman was aged 60 and an experienced traveller who had spent a lot of time in south-east Asia.

The two women were part of a group of 10 travel agents from Perth who arrived in Thailand on Monday.

"They were attacked by the men on the street," Ms Yone said.

"One woman had a cut on her arm and she went to the hospital. She is already back from the hospital.

Australian woman killed in Phuket

AAP

PHUKET: -- An Australian woman has died in Thailand, after being stabbed by a man trying to snatch her bag.

Phuket Wan Tourism News says the woman, among a group of travel agents from Perth, was walking along a street on the tourist island of Phuket when a motorcycle pulled beside her and a passenger attempted to take her bag.

The woman struggled with the man, before falling to the ground with a stab wound to her heart, the website says.

Another woman walking with the victim received a gash to her arm, and the offenders sped off empty handed.

A Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) spokesperson says they are aware of the death of an Australian woman in Thailand and are providing consular assistance to her family.

"It would not be appropriate to discuss the case further while a police investigation is in progress," the spokesperson said.

POLICE are hunting two killers who knifed to death a female Perth travel agent in a bag snatch gone wrong on the Thai holiday island of Phuket last night.

The woman struggled to hold her bag. A 10cm knife wound to the heart killed her soon after as the two men sped off on a motorcycle about 10.30pm local time (11.30pm WA time).

It is understood the woman worked for a prominent travel agent in Perth's northern suburbs.

Another woman was also slashed on the arm but was treated in a Phuket hospital and allowed to leave early today after receiving stitches.

Another sad case....

Nice to see the BiB are using their extensive training and powers of deduction to the fullest... "Police believe a particularly sharp weapon was used"....sad.png

RIP, murdered 60 years old Perth Travel Agent.

Its all over the ABC news here. A Perth travel agents are shocked as Phuket is the safest place to travel and this is the first attack in that area.

its time to stop the corny remarks about the police force .... its no longer a joke .....i cannot understand why a country such as australia does not slap a travel ban on this place immediately ...the phuket police are nothing but tea money collectors , they see tourists purely as a source of income .... until corruption is dealt with we will live in a lawless society ... so time to bail , tell your friends , colleagues , business associates stay away ....go to Myanamar ....

If I am reading your post correctly ... you want the Australian Government to 'slap a ban' of Phuket or on Thailand?

Phuket maybe be difficult to do because it's not a Nation.

The whole of Thailand is not Phuket.

It's in the Australian news reports already.

Phuket seems to get more bad press now than Pattaya.

Is there a reason? Are the Pattaya police more on the ball?

oh man, this is not cool, with all the talk about saving face in this country, where's the face in a cowardly act like this? it may not have been Thais, but they were men in Thailand, what the hell is going on here? forget jetski's and scams, this is the stuff tourists are really scared of, being attacked and killed while taking a pleasant walk...dam_n it, after Phi Phi, this one could seal their fate...RIP and condolences to families.

Not according to Thais, listening to 3AW radio streamed from Melbourne they spoke to a spokeswoman from the Phuket hotels association or similar who says that this is an extremely isolated incident and thefts and other crimes in Phuket are very low. They do not believe that an incident such as this will have an impact on tourism.

lawless thailand... so many crooks. In 16 years in Thailand I have seen more than my share of abusers and coward acts. From government, to police/army until the small crook on the street and in bars...

Experienced travelers? When are women going to learn to stop carrying those handbags in places where they know purse snatching is rampant?

Well to do that you would need to know that purse snatches are rampant in that area, and with the BIB and TAT already starting their public relations on this saying it is a rare occurrence many people might just believe they <deleted> these tow public bodies feed them.

On another note, irrespective of whether they knew or not, it is not the fault of the victim.

Terrible tragedy indeed ... nobody should die in that way ..if the police were less busy trying to get money from corruption they would perhaps be more visible to those criminals, I never seen any police patrol in those very touristic areas.. I might be wrong of course .Well Thailand is not safe anymore that for sure.

Very sad news indeed.....and as part of a group of tour agents I wonder what information they will give when back home in Perth ? Avoid Thailand comes to my mind.....and quite rightly so. What is happening to this place ?

I just returned from a week in Krabi - accompanied by two pretty akha ladies. While in Krabi, we seriously contemplated going to Phuket and also considered Phi Phi - which are both relatively nearby. We didn't, and maybe that's a good thing. Poisonings in Phi Phi and stabbings in Phuket ......probably best we stuck to ho-hum Krabi. Had a v. nice time, btw.

am saddened about the wanton stabbing. Don't know if there's much local police could have done to prevent such a bizarre violent act.

wow, I would assume that LOS will take a Australian tourism hit for this especially in light of the girls last week in pii pii, and now a travel agent. I doubt aussie agents will be recommending LOS for this coming high season. It would be interesting to see if increasing penalties for crimes against tourist would reduce this sort of thing. like double the sentence.

Welcome to Phuket. This is what it's like here. Some will say it's safe blah blah. teh fact of the matter is that most of these attacks successful or attempted don't even get reported to the police. What's the point?

They have a user feedback page for the news item,

We were discussing this incident this morning in another area here and all the comments were directed to the support of the victim.

There are times and places to vilify Phuket and all that has tragically gone wrong there ... but maybe not this time, not this day and not this thread.
