My wife is after me to buy her a new tablet computer. Generally, she will use it most as I need a large table computer for my business. However, I may use it occasionally, for e-mail and note taking. As I don;t really know much about tablet computing, I am confused by all the different models available. Any advice on what to buy would be appreciated.

Budget? 3G? Or Wifi Only? Screen size?

I suspect your Wife has a particular model in mind? If not, what are her application requirements?

Generally your options are Android or iOS (Apple iPad 2 or new iPad). There are more options in the Android world, esp. re: screen size, price but the new iPad is clearly the best overall, assuming you are happy with all that iOS entails.

There have been quite a few tablet threads here, several on budget Android tablets from Chinese manufacturers like Ainol and G-Pad. Most first-hand reports I recall commented very favorably on almost all of these budget (~ 6,000-ish baht) tablets.

as mentioned, first way to narrow things is to know your budget... if cost is no concern, and you don't care about flexibility, the ipad 3 could be considered...

otherwise, starting at about $150 you can get some decent tablets from china with the latest android version, ips screens, dual-core, usb, hdmi (for output to tv) that will run everything out there... once you step into the $300+ range you can start looking at name brands such as samsung galaxy tab. these generally will have better build quality, perhaps better camera quality and warranty/service issues should be easier to iron out.

good budget tablet is Ainol Aurora 2 as already mentioned by lomatopo - $150 http://www.aliexpres...holesalers.html

Ainol Aurora 1 is single core, but should be fine for most everything... $80 http://www.aliexpres...holesalers.html

if interested, check out youtube to see these tablets in real time use...

As you and your wife are in beginning stage of tablet using, I would recommend you to start with medium price and fine quality one like Gpad. This brand belongs to G Net company which is a reputable cell phone company in Thailand. It has service centers all over Thailand and call center to help. Price starts from 3990 baht for 7" tablet for latest Android 4 version. I do not recommend to go for Chinese brand tablets as they do not have service centers. Even though they claim that they have one year warranty, if any hardware goes wrong, they will send your tablet to get fixed in China which takes 30-45 days!
