Beach Resorts Could Generate Their Own Power From Waves

Featured Replies

I've been perusing a couple sites online which talk of low-tech ways of generating power from moving water. Specifically, rivers and along sea shores. Some parts of the coast in Krabi area would be well suited for wave generated power. There are two basic ways: One is to charge batteries using the force of the waves powering an DC charger . The other, which I like better, is to use the waves' force to pump water to a small holding tank up high. Then using that water, as it descends, to make power.

Some places along the Krabi coast have waves which are near high hills. Here's a link, among many others:

If Ao Nang and other places could generate even some of their own electricity from the sea, rather than using generators or being on the grid, that would be a big, in practical terms and for its image. There may even be a role for entrepreneurs to make some money.

HA, HA, HA, HA, HA HA !!!

Dude, really, you have too much time on your hands. How can I be like you?

As a surfer and beach person I can tell you, there aren't waves in Krabi, blocked by Islands, but we get going on Trang, now there is some unharvested surfline.

You kill me buddy !!! Funny for sure.

You sound like you'd fit right in with the crowd watching the horse race against the locomotive, laughing and drinking with your buddies, finding it so ridiculous that someone building something out of iron, could even think such a contraption could outrun a galloping horse.

....or the executive at IBM who claimed that computers would never be more than a passing fad, and if so, only for the super rich.

You sound like you'd fit right in with the crowd that says we need to eliminate illegal drug trafficking, but ridiculously can't put a stop to actual drug consumption.

Here's one for you: Solar

While good in theory the technology is simply not there yet. There are wave and tidal generation projects operating around the world but they are not practical nor economically viable without massive govenment subsidies. Same with solar and wind unfortunately.

But maybe a certain ecological warrior poster can set up an incinerator that generates electricity? Two birds, one stone?

Does anyone know if there is a college in Thailand with that course?

Don't confuse Power with energy. While there is a lot of energy in the ocean, the problem is leveraging it up to a usable power output. Energy/unit time. Lots of wave and tidal energy extraction systems are available. Few are economically viable at the present time
