SOUTH CRISIS

Parties have 'amicable' meeting

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra yesterday emerged from a three-hour meeting with the opposition Democrat Party on laying down a peace path in the restive South, saying the two parties agreed on the objective but may take different ways to express themselves.

"We want to see the same thing. I told the opposition that we are working toward that goal," she said.

The opposition may have some concerns about the situation but the government explained what it was doing on the ground, she said.

The opposition MPs, who are mostly from the South, stated their reservations over development work and the government clarified what the state agencies were trying to do in that regard, she said.

Yingluck and opposition leader Abhisit Vejjajiva sat down to discuss measures to contain the violence in the deep South that has killed more than 5,000 people since the end of 2003.

The government had invited Abhisit and Democrat MPs, who claimed they knew better about the problems in the predominantly Muslim region, to join the meeting to exchange views and information on how to bring the violence to an end.

The opposition's recommendations were not any different from what the government was doing, but the way they communicated to the public might be different, she said.

The opposition wanted to see peace, development and local participation, but so does the government, she said.

Army chief Prayuth Chan-ocha said the meeting's atmosphere was amicable and both sides reached a deeper understanding.

Foreign Minister Surapong Towichukchaikul said the opposition suggested many useful ideas to solve the problems in the southern border provinces.

Deputy Premier Chalerm Yoobamrung said it was the first time in his long political career to see the government and opposition sitting together in a good mood.

Abhisit said the opposition needed to talk to the government as it felt that many of its actions were problematic.

The recent establishment of an operations centre for the South, for example, was confusing the lines of command rather than helping to address the problems, he said.

The opposition offered some advice so that the government could better deal with the situation, such as a politically-led military approach, and the government now saw the whole picture. But the opposition did not expect the government to follow up on all the points, he said.

Good to see the Prime Minister taking the initiative and acting in a parliamentary manner.

It is practical, courteous and intelligent of her to give table to and pay heed to the opposition on this subject, in a non partisan way.

Isn't the way it should be in a democracy?

Shame it took the opposition leader 'cornering her' before she did this though...

Where's the "cornering" in this ??

".........The government had invited Abhisit and Democrat MPs, who claimed they knew better about the problems in the predominantly Muslim region, to join the meeting to exchange views and information on how to bring the violence to an end........."

I don't have the link (search, you will find it) - where Abhisit said he would only attend this meeting if Yingluck was present...

oh god, this forum gets tiresome.

Yesterday, in the other paper.

Chalerm was the one that issued the invite to Abhisit to come and talk with him about the Deep South, not Yingluck.

kinda takes the whole abhisit 'cornering her' before she did this' insinuation out of the picture really doesn't it?! (rhetorical)

i know it wasn't you who claimed that.

How pettily inaccurate do you want to be ??

anyway, let's just accept that people will find a negative in any story.

guess it just depends on the glass half full or glass half empty personality.

Yes, it's pathetic and rather sad.

For probably the first time ever, there is a serious meeting between government and opposition to discuss and to try and at least start to resolve, a major civil problem facing the country.

The elected government consulting with the opposition on how to find a way forwards.

This should be encouraged.

The problems in the south are probably the biggest problem the country faces after drugs.

They ( YS and AV ) are to be commended for this initiative but on TV we get the usual sad grumps, looking for something to moan about.

No doubt we can soon expect the predictable and oh so witty comments about her shoes, hair style and shopping habits...........

whistling.gif Does that "amicable relations" go so far as to suggest that the Muslim areas in the south have some sort of limited autonamy...there own regional organizational assembly outsideb the control of the central Thai government?

Somehow, I very much doubt that will ever happen.

I'm not saying that's needed....but I will say many Muslim leaders in the south won't co-operte unless that's at least considered.

Otherwise, I very much fear, all the Thai politicians in the world are just talking....flapping their mouths... and nothing concrete is ever going to happen.

She should have taken AV's advice earlier and on other subjects too! That would have made her VERY courteous and intelligent.

Remember, it is not AV avoiding her; it's Yinluck avoiding everybody in parliament and instead prefers to call her brother for advice.

The "government" refers to thousands.

How apologetically imprecise do you prefer things?

IMO it was Abhisit who was "cornered".

He was invited but tried to avoid the meeting by "requesting" that Ms Yingluck will be present too. She was happy to oblige, it was probably her intention to attend anyway.

Now he is part of the process, "they (Democrats and Abhisit rolleyes.gif )claimed they knew better about the problems in the predominantly Muslim region". It won't be so easy for him to criticize the position of the government in the south.

One more time the poor Abhisit has been out smarted by the Shinawatras wink.png

Atleast 1 time the Shinawatras couldn't avoid listening to the helpfull advice of AV.

Sure Yingluck whould have prefered to go for a photo op or a nice lunch with a real estate developer.

I believe last week when K. Chalerm invited them when Yingluck would not be in attendance.

Blah Blah Blah

The end result was the government was going to keep on doing what it is doing. All she did was explain why her government was doing what it was doing and politely listened to the opposition and people closer to the problem.

Not one idea was adopted by her. She claimed that they were both doing the same thing just had different way of stating it. In other words the other side was to stupid to understand the other side doing the same thing.

You are quite correct there was no cornering. It was a act of desperation on the Governments part remember Yingluck had to give up Photo Op time to attend it or the Dems would not attend it. And when it was all said and done she did not accept any thing the Dems had to offer just said the government was doing that already but they wee presenting it in a different manner.

Abhisit said about a week ago that he was ready to meet, and that he was just waiting for an invitation.

I wonder, given that there has been over 5000 deaths, and the ongoing financial damage to property and tourism in the south, perhaps Mr Abhisit has recommended enough is enough, call an SOE in the south and unleash the RTA.....as they did in the Bangkok crackdown they can walk through the south shooting live rounds and shouting if you don't surrender we will kill you.

Should please the majority of Tvisa Democrat supporters even if there is a smattering of 'collateral damage'........and after all what other solution is there? How else could you possibly deal with such blatant insurrection?

The only way a Shinatra would 'outsmart' Mark is by trickery, and if there were any hesitation from him, it would likely be because he doesn't care to sit opposite a bunch of no-hopers churning out the same old dross and not listening to a word he says anyway.

Well perhaps Abhisit realises from his 'education', that there is a single over=riding philosophy that Governments should abide by, and that is that once the voting is done, no matter how much you hate the result, every single MP is then there to work together for the benefit of the country and it's people, that is what they are paid for !!! There is enough time for fighting at the next elections, these clowns do nothing else (normally) other than fight!
