What it means is that 40-60% of behaviours in a criminal family (where there is intergenerational behaviour) can be accounted for from genetics. The rest is not due to genetics. 40-60% averages to 50%, so you are back to nurture versus nature. In simple terms that you can understand, crime tends to run somewhat in families, and studies suggest genetics plays a moderate role in explaining why people differ in criminal behaviour—but environmental and social factors are just as important. Having "bad" genes though doesn't mean you end up being criminal, any more than if you had a BRCA mutation you will end up with breast cancer (male and femal), prostate cancer or pancreatic cancer. It just means the risk is raised. In reality, about 10% of crime can be related to two genes; mutations in the gene expressing Monoamine Oxidase A, which help modulate the production of serotonin and dopamine. The mutation, which is described as a "low activity" mutation, can interact with alcohol, giving rise to violent behaviour. The MAOA gene has also been called the "warrior" gene. Half the population carry it. The other mutation is in CDH13, which is related to how your brain develops.
