PHUKET: -- The new Governor of Phuket, Maitree Intusut, landed at Phuket International Airport at 11:20am today to be greeted by a welcoming committee of hundreds of people.

Among those present to welcome him to the island were all three vice governors, Phuket Airport Director Prathuang Sornkham, Marine Department Phuket office Director Phuripat Theerakulpisut, and Phuket Tourist Association Vice President Sarayuth Mallam.

Accompanied by his wife, Mrs Pawinee, Governor Maitree accepted dozens of bouquets and greetings, stopping only briefly to speak with Phuket’s leading officials and business people.

According to his aides, Gov Maitree will pay his respects at the Heroines’ Monument in Thalang today, as well as the Rama 5 statue near Phuket Provincial Hall.

He also will visit Tah Reua Temple to pay his respects to Phuket’s highest-ranking monk, Phra Kru Wisut Kittiyaporn.

In the evening, a welcoming party will be held at the Governor’s Residence in Phuket Town.

Governor Maitree, who will attend to his first formal duties as Phuket Governor at Provincial Hall tomorrow, replaces former Governor Tri Augkaradacha, who retired on September 30.

As Phuket’s senior vice governor, Sommai Prijasilpa has been filling the role of Acting Governor in the interim.
