Likely about-turn on Thaksin's passport seen as a move to save the govt

Nuntida Puangthong

The Nation on Sunday

BANGKOK: -- The Foreign Ministry's likely U-turn on the issue of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra's passport reflects a strategy of "nipping in the bud" any threat to the Yingluck government after realising the dangers of a political backlash if it refuses to revoke the passport issued to the fugitive leader last year.

Jutharat Thipnampha

The Nation on Sunday

Bangkok not only has problems with its drainage system, it also has ground subsidence, which causes land to be bowl-shaped in many areas of the capital. This caused flooding problems when it rained heavily and made drainage more difficult, a city official said recently.

Son of missing couple sues doctor for libel

The Nation on Sunday

Sawang Numjui, the father of Samart Numjui who went missing three years ago with his wife Orasa Kerdsab, filed a defamation complaint at Muang Phetchaburi Police Station yesterday against Pol Colonel Dr Suphat Laohawatthana whom he accused of being involved in the disappearance of his parents.

Suphat's son on October 8 had shown the doctor's open letter in front of Phetchaburi Prison. The letter accused Sawang of being a subordinate of Suphat's brother Suthep Laohawatthana. The letter also accused Sawang of being involved in criminal cases. Sawang said this had led others to think negatively about him. Sawang rejected the allegations as false. He said he had never known Suthep before the search for the missing couple's bodies, and Suthep only talked to him about the search. He admitted that Suphat had helped his daughter to get a job at the Police General Hospital.

Police investigators will summon Sawang for additional testimony on Tuesday and then interview Suphat in prison before concluding the case for court.

Senate panels to be briefed on probes

The Nation on Sunday

BANGKOK: -- The results of investigations by the Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission into corruption in the past year would be given to two Senate committees on Tuesday, the deputy permanent secretary for Justice and former PACC chief, Dusadee Arayawuth, said yesterday.

He will initially present the results of PACC's investigation into budget spending on disasters, tax evasion on luxury-car imports, Krung Thai Bank's Bt7-billion loan to President Agri Trading Co that had presented fake rice-trade contracts to seek loans.

Meanwhile, Pol Capt Suwanee Sawaengpol, the deputy secretary-general of the Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO), said she had not yet received information about the Anti-Corruption Network's recent disclosure that Bt16 billion were sent from Bangkok for money-laundering to Hong Kong but it was intercepted by the HK anti-corruption agency.

Democrat Party MP Ong-art Klampaiboon urged Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra's government to investigate the Hong Kong money-laundering case, which he claimed might involve politicians.
