crash-3.jpg

PATTAYA: -- The German Managing Director of the well-known Lomatec Company based in Jomtien was killed in a single vehicle road accident in Jomtien just before daybreak on Saturday.

Police and rescue services were called to Jomtien Second Road in front of Soi 9 just after 5.30am to deal with the crash which caused the death of Mr. Michael Lambauer aged 39 from Germany, who has lived in Pattaya for many years and was the Managing Director of the Lomatec Company based in Jomtien. He was also a Harley-Davidson enthusiast and member of a local Motorbike Club.

Witnesses to the crash suggested he was driving at a high rate of speed and erratically as he approached a curve in the road which he was unable to negotiate. The bike hit a street pylon head-on which caused the immediate death of Mr. Lambauer who suffered major life-ending injuries to his upper body. At the time he was driving a 750cc Harley Davidson which sustained major damage consistent with a high-speed collision.

I wish they wouldn't show photos of the deceased, even pixallated ones. Friends and family may well read that article and that's just too upsetting to view.

Another one gone too soon.

And we can relaunch the debate whether it is preferable to cocoon off people from reality and if the pictures can contribute to make people more cautious when driving.

RIP Michael Lambauer

I have to agree, reminding fools of their mortality is a kind gesture, the more graphic and direct the better!

Agree. As this is mainly a farang forum there really is no need for it. If the natives want to see the gore then read your newspaper, not on a forum for the world to see. We all will expire in one way or another but that is MY privacy.

theblether seems to say in his post that he wishes that the Thai media wouldn't show the pictures at all, not just hide them from foreigners.

But maybe I'm mistaken.

My father always told me bikes were the machines of the devil. After decades of everything from road racing, sidecars, dirt tracking and street racing one thing I can advise, pain hurts, and to think us mere flesh and bone individuals, even all set up these days in kevlar cocoons and space helmets, you simply cannot stop a hurtling machine allowing you to join the door knock at the devils gate. Add anything other than an adrenaline rush to your body and you will hasten the exit from this life. Ignore what pathetic protection we can afford ourselves and you may get a pardon this time around but they have your number and to continue to tempt fate is folly. And yes I still have a PCX for the back streets of Thailand.

I spent about 30 years madly, passionately in love with riding (and only stopped because of a promise I made to the mother of my children to stop once I began producing them). Learning to ride at 10 changed me forever and motorcycles added hugely to my life. There's a part of me that wishes for my son to have the same sort of growth ad joy in his life.

But I'm terrified he will want to try bikes...

My condolences to those who knew and cared for Mr. Lambauer.

I have 2 videos from Pattaya bike accidents saved on my hardrive.

One is about a guy who didn't die, but one half of his face just hangs on his chest. He walks, totally shocked and surprised he can't speak.

Another video shows police and rescue volunteers scraping off brain matter of two guys from second road and the mangled bodies of the bike riders.

These 2 videos are totally shocking and I watch them sometimes to remind me of the dangers.

I keep them so that I can show them to another person if needed (for example if my children should get cocky on a 2 wheel vehicle).

Luckily my son is very cautious with everything involving speed or height.

I don't need pics to be afraid.

I've been cut off my lane so many times

so i'm afraid every second i have anyone in front of me,

perhaps even more so when someone on the opposing lane prepare to make a U-turn

into my lane.

Hope it was quick for him

I think that by most media standards the pictures shown in this report were really very tame. It is hard to make out anything other than machinery and I really see no cause for objection, except perhaps the addition of the passport photo.

I think that it is important to make people realise that motorbikes are hideously dangerous devices and that anyone using one stands a real risk of serious crippling injury or death. The same applies to other vehicles (cars, jetskis) and powered devices in general and it doesnt hurt to remind users of those devices that they can all be very dangerous also.

So I would say that more gory pictures are needed, not fewer, in the hope that they will encourage other people to be more careful.

There is also one more aspect to the question. We all die sooner or later. No one escapes, no matter how good or bad or rich or poor they are. Whilst it is nicer to go painlessly at a ripe old age in your sleep, most people probably wont go that way. Many will die in pain of illnesses like cancer. Some will go violently in their youth. I cant see the point of pretending to anyone that things are otherwise and Thais (and Buddhists in general) have got their attitude to this exactly right.

But here at ThaiVisa/PattayaOne, it seems if a farang dies from almost any cause, it's considered news-worthy. There was a recent report of someone who died from a heart attack. Nothing extraordinary or suspicious.

So I guess that means if you are a farang who dies in Thailand, you could very well become a forum topic here at this "mainly farang forum." And when it comes to "respect for the diseased [sic]and their family," this mainly farang forum tends to make mince meat of anything and anyone dragged onto this platform especially, but not solely, if a Thai wife survives.

Anyway, Thailand and other countries show horrific photos on cigarette packets as a deterrent to those choosing to smoke. Maybe if one person, farang or Thai, realizes that he is mortal and consequently drives more safely, it will be worth the discomfort.

My heart goes out to his family and friends.

I'm not saying this is the case here at all but it's a good reminder, especially to all motorcyclists to wear all the gear all the time and that drugs and drinks don't mix with driving / riding.

RIP
