Hi all,

Work updated me to an sIII with a True H sim card. Phone came loaded with 4.0.4 and I'd like to stay on ICS for now. Since then I have loaded a lot of ICS specific custom roms, problem is none of them work correctly.

Example: One rom I like has wifi working and also the sim has a signal (meaning I can text and make phone calls) but I cannot get a data connection. It's a new sim card on the 1st day of activation so thought maybe that could be a problem. Put the card in a co worker's iPhone and data has now problem. Put a dtac and ais sim in my phone with the custom rom still loaded and get data no problem. So this all points to the True sim mucking things up.

A different rom (cynogen 9.1) I can get data coming through but wifi doesn't work...

Anyone have any insight to this?

thanks

That's one of the challenges in flashing a custom ROM - the baseband modem, which the developer included, may not be ideally suited for your specific mobile broadband provider, and the WiFi modules can be very finicky as well. Not sure what to say as you really haven't asked any questions, or provided enough detail to recommend some alternatives. You also seem to be changing quite a few things at the same time.

I'd make sure I have a working SIM, data plan, properly configured APN. You could also try flashing different modems with CWM. You could flash back to stock, or even flash stock 4.1.1

What is your current baseband?

Hey guys,

thanks for the input. I am far from an expert on this stuff but CWM, the developers and Android have made an initial root and flash really easy and with no worry to restore your back up.

Currently my phone is working fine rooted but using the out of the box touchwiz system. Data, wifi, etc... all works.

My baseband version is

I19300BWLH1

So I guess I need to google for roms that are compatible with this or at least which modems to apply after the roms are flashed? There are some roms that have a full kitchen of things to choose from so I guess just start from there.

I guess I am confused. In your first post you say you are experiencing issues, perhaps with 3G and/or WiFi. In your most recent post you say everything works. Am I missing something?

An LH1 baseband should work fine.

This ROM has been perfect for me. I have found no glitches at all.

ADDED - The Truemove-H SIM needs to have the APN settings put in manually. I'd guess that's why you cannot connect with data.

My phone is rooted. When I restore back to original factory settings everything works fine. When I flash a custom rom I either don't have wifi (rare) or I have no access to the data network (almost every rom)

This would make sense, I'll give this a shot

thanks

My experience across three TrueMove H SIMs and four DTAC SIMs was that the APN information, and MMS, was "baked into" the SIM, and required no additional configuration. This was on both custom and stock ROMs. FWIW, I always remove the uSD card and SIM card before flashing any ROM, then after a clean boot, power off, re-install the SIM, and power on.

With TrueMove H you should also enable roaming, this will allow you to roam onto the legacy TrueMove GSM 1800 MHz network for voice and (GSM) data when outside of CAT coverage.

That said, anytime you have a mobile broadband connectivity issue the first things to address are:

1.) do I have a data plan? is it 3G? time-based? volume-based?

2.) is my APN configured correctly, and enabled?

3.) are others nearby able to access 3G with the same service provider?

Assuming the OP has a properly configured APN then it just may be a baseband issue. WiFi issues can be more challenging to address as there are dozens of issues that could be causing the problem. Also, some custom ROMs do have WiFi issues; this is one of the most common problems.

My Truemove-H SIM was for the iPhone. I got that one because that's all they had. I thought that I made a mistake buying it because I could not connect to data. I called True and an English talking Thai tech guy walked me through putting in the information. It immediately started working. Maybe some other type SIM cards have the baked in information but the iPhone SIM did not have it and I had to put it in manually.

As a side note, I downloaded a "SGSIII junk app remover thalinaC v1.0" that was made especially for the i9300 and ROM Omega v33.2. It released a lot of RAM and everything I use still works great. I also installed a new application called Advanced System Care Mobile. I have no opinion yet and will decide whether to keep or get rid of it when I see if it has an affect on battery life. I have been getting about three days from my battery.

^ I suspect any iPhone SIM would have the information, but maybe only in a format understood by iOS?

There are videos/tutorials on the TrueMove H site which show one how to manually configure APN and MMS settings for various phones/models.

The guy at the shop who sold me the iPhone SIM assured me that it would work in my Samsung. Since I couldn't connect to data, I called True. I thought the tech guy at True would tell me that I bought the wrong SIM card and I was pleased when he told me it was not a problem. Within a few minutes he had me up and running.

Manual configure the APN and I'm good to go. Seems like a lot of the roms I flashed when I went to APN it was blank. I just edit, create new, save, reboot was needed sometimes but then I'm good to go. Thank you all for the input!

Glad to hear that you got it going.

If you update to Jellybean, let us know which ROM you are using, how you like it and if you had/have any problems with the ROM.

I flashed jellybean 4.1.2 with AnonoRom v18

I don't know much about roms but I picked this one because the reviews were that it was stable and had good batt life (it undervolts the processors). The only reason I was looking to root and flash a rom is because I hate having those samsung and google apps that you can't get rid of but I like a stock look. I've only had it for a day but all my camera apps work and touchdown mail works so right now my only complaint with the rom is that it doesn't have that cool "turning off the tv" affect when locking the screen that seemed standard on a lot of other roms had. Also it just so happened that with this rom I didn't need to do any APN input, it just worked from the get go.

I am not a strong in the tech dept but I am really amazed how easy these developers have made it to root and flash. If anyone has had interest in flashing but been a little hesitant I did like 20min research and then followed this youtube link to the tee and it's simple. The guy really goes over every little thing.

I got a widget from Android market called Power toggles. It can be customized for the toggles you want to keep on your home screen. I use four toggles, Data, Wifi, brightness and screen off and lock. Screen off and lock works immediately.

I've been messing with a custom ROM on my SGS2 which has 15 scrollable toggles, maybe too many? Baseband is OK, 6 Mbps/3/Mbps (DTAC), poor GPS lock so far (may need tuning?). The coolest thing is the Multi-Window feature. Completely customizable/scrollable.

That's the main reason that I installed Power Toggles. I then discovered that the many toggles in the notifications can be changed to only display the ones you want. I like the Power Toggle showing on my home screen so I kept it.

My ROM has a "quick panel settings" and that is where I can choose what toggles show on notifications.

My GPS actually connects to more satellites faster than my Garmin.

Sometimes an updated ROM is not as good as an earlier release. I was using Omega v33.2 and updated to Omega v35. My battery life suffered a lot so I have gone back to v33.2. The free ROM Manager (CWM) works great and I have no problems switching ROMS.

Loma. How do you "tune" GPS?

My GPS on the I-mobile Q6 takes ages to lock on. Sometimes 10 minutes or more.

sent from my Q6

No idea. I just keep flashing ROMs/basebands/modems until I find one which provides all round superior performance.

I usually get a lock in 10 seconds, this assumes an unimpeded view of the sky.

And speaking of custom ROMs, I've been running one on my SGS2 which just gives amazing battery performance - more than double any other ROM I've ever used - 2+ days where I was charging it every night before.
